Thanks, Chris. I'll be looking at the bike boulevards (again) later this year. I think that's another area where there's a declining return on extended input.

ReplyGreat story. I'll be sure to say hello when I see them on the trails.
(Also, ignore "Peter" & "Barry" & and all of the other voices that emanate from one rather obsessed fellow. You could post a story about butterflies riding bicycles under baby turtles in hangliders, and Jim would find a way to turn it back into one of his standard whines.)

ReplyThis is the Arlington Patch, right? Pretty sure we're clearly settled on the side of decency and equality, here. The rest of Virginia will catch up, eventually.

ReplyWould love to learn more about the facts in this case. It's important that bad drivers face serious consequences when their actions kill people.

ReplyI'd like to see using a cellphone - texting or calling - while driving made an offense. People are clearly challenged enough by driving. Adding in cellphones just makes it worse.

ReplyGood ideas, Rob. Might run out of paper making a list of authorities from whom cooperation would be required, though . . .
Yoeun - I'm tired of inconsiderate cyclists, too. What I'm trying to do here is actually reduce conflict/injury, instead of just ineffectively wagging my finger at those who blow the intersection.
Geof, cyclists on Lee Highway have the ROW, of course. But even if you were able to coax all of the Custis users off the Custis and into the road, that only addresses westbound motion.
I'm not much of a fan of sign overload, either, but in this particular case, the signs there are quite ineffective. You'd never notice the "Watch for Bikes Crossing" sign unless you were looking for it, and the stop sign facing eastbound cyclists is absurd (both in placement and size).

That's just sad. VDOT should spend its time and resources dealing with something that actually (and regularly) hurts people at that intersection - the piss poor design of the pedestrian crossing at Lee/Lynn.
