The late March snow took some by surprise in Arlington County.

It's about a week into spring, but you wouldn't know that by looking outside your window Monday morning. Arlington saw about 2 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. County offices and services remained open as the snow lightly blanketed the area. Read more:

'Surprise' Snow in Arlington; Weather Service issues Winter Advisory

Arlington has seen about an inch of snow overnight, more then during the 'snowquester.'

While the snowquester failed a significant amount of snow to Arlington, snow lovers woke up to a surprising amount of Monday morning just a few days after the official start of Spring. "I can't believe it actually snowed!" wrote Twitter user @VTjawo, of Vienna.  According to the latest data available from the National Weather Service, about an inch of snow has fallen in the couny as of 5 a.m. The weater service has issued a winter weather advisory in the area in effect until noon today, with an accumulation of up to 2 inches expected. Arlington County officials have not announced any closures. Arlington Public Schools are on spring break this week.

Snow in the Forecast Sunday Evening, Monday Morning for Arlington

Snow is in the forecast for 22201, 22209 on Sunday and Monday morning.

A harsh reminder that spring is technically still a few days away (it starts Wednesday), forecasters are predicting snow showers and sleet late Sunday night and Monday morning for Arlington. Temperatures will drop from about 40 degrees Sunday afternoon to 31 degrees by Monday morning, with a 30 to 60 percent chance of precipitation, according to The Weather Channel hourly forecast. Precipitation should start as rain around 4 p.m. Sunday with temperatures in the upper 30s, but change to snow showers before dawn Monday. Arlington Schools, Federal Government Open Thursday

So long, snowquester.

Arlington Public Schools will be open Thursday, according to spokesman Frank Bellavia. The federal government, too, has announced that it will be open Thursday. Metro has announced it will run on a normal weekday schedule Thursday. No more than a half-inch of snow is expected to accumulate overnight in Arlington, according to the latest information from the National Weather Service.

Mostly Rain on Your Snowday: Are You Disappointed?

Clarendon, much of Arlington, was mostly cold and wet Wednesday.

While the National Weather Service had called for up to 12 inches of snow in Arlington County on Wednesday, most of what Arlingtonians got was rain. Parts of Fairfax County and Maryland did, however, see some snowfall. Do you wish we had seen more snow? Tell us in the comments.

It doesn't take terrorists to close down the capital of the free world, close schools, shut down out airports, just an announcement of snow. Coming from NY, I would have been laughed out of the State if we allowed this to happen. But maybe the hot air from our national politicians kept us a few degrees above the freezing point ?   more ›

Updated 4:43 p.m. Wednesday: The winter weather advisory has now expired for Arlington County, according to the National Weather Service. ++++ Updated 2:42 p.m. Wednesday: Most of Arlington is seeing rain rather then snow today. "It is very quiet in Arlington. We seem to be sitting in a band or pocket between rain/snow bands; if it shifts to the west, we will get all rain. Arlington Schools, County Offices Closed Wednesday Due to Snow

Snow accumulations predictions increased overnight; area under winter storm warning through 3 a.m. Thursday.

Due to the snow, classes are canceled for Arlington Public Schools students Wednesday. Arlington County government offices are also closed. The Office of Personnel Management announced the federal government is closed today, but telework and emergency employees should follow their agency's guidelines. Predictions early Wednesday indicated the area would see 6 to 12 inches of snow, if not more. The entire metropolitan area is under a winter storm warning through 3 a.m. Thursday morning (27 hours). Winds of up to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour, are also expected.
