The Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships were Saturday on the Occoquan River.
The women's crew from Washington-Lee took defeated five other teams in the Women's 1st Eight Petite final. The team's time was 5:33.70, besting Lake Braddock by more than a second. The men's team placed third in the Mens 1st Eight Final later in the afternoon and fifth in the Mens 2nd Eight Final. The Washington-Lee High School PTA has decided some of the proceeds will go to charity this year.
A portion of the proceeds from the ‘Formals for Five’ drive by the Washington-Lee High School PTA will go to families of victims in the Boston bombings. As Patch reported earlier this month, the goal of the event is to collect new, used and gently used formal wear and accessories for high school students to purchase at $5 each. In light of recent events, the PTA has opted to send some of the proceeds from the event to a victim’s fund. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this horrible incident,” reads a note from the Formals for Five organizers. “We hope the contribution will help in some small way.” A boutique featuring all the prom dresses will take place next week. The Washington-Lee High School PTA is collecting formal dresses and accessories for its annual ‘Formals for Five’ project. The project collects new, used and gently used formal wear and accessories for women to purchase at $5 each. “It’s making it possible for everyone to go,” said Natalie Roy, who is a member of the PTA and co-chairwoman of the event. Once all the donations have been collected, the PTA will host a pop-up boutique from 3 to 7 p.m. on April 23 and 24 at Washington-Lee to give girls a chance to shop and try on dresses. The sale is open to all Arlington high school students. Not many 10-year-old olds are enterprising enough to start their own band, let alone stick with it. But the five guys in Safety Third pulled it off. Now, the band — whose members are all ninth-graders at Washington-Lee and Yorktown high schools — have been playing together for four years and have their first CD under their belt. "We've all been good friends since elementary school. So we just thought it would be a fun thing to do," said bassist Gabe Westergren, 14. "We just decided to have this band. And it's gone pretty well." Several Arlingtonians have been selected for the 13th Annual James B. Hunter Human Rights Award, county officials announced Tuesday. Wakefield High School’s Project Upstanders, Washington-Lee High School’s Best Buddies Club, Sara Heisey and John "Kip" Laramie are this year's winners. The James B. Hunter Human Rights Awards, named after a former Arlington County Board member, are given to those who dedicate themselves to human services, according to a news release from the county's Human Rights Commission. Washington-Lee High School welcomed "Glee" star Lauren Potter on Friday afternoon. “It’s amazing. She is so nice, and it’s awesome to have her here,” said Brittany Mirro, a 17-year-old senior and president of Washington-Lee’s Best Buddies Chapter. Best Buddies International is a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Potter’s visit was a treat for the Washington-Lee Best Buddies group, which raised the most money in donations for the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C., event, which takes place Saturday. After four hard weeks, the Wakefield High School Warriors will play Washington-Lee on Friday at the Generals' homecoming game. Wakefield is 0-4 so far this season, but the team has been getting better each week, Assistant Head Coach Mike Warden said. "Those guys are really good. They're coached well. We've been watching them on film, and they're a very impressive team. It's going to be their homecoming, so it'll be an emotionally full night. It'll be tough," Warden said. Washington-Lee student one of five in inaugural class of literary ambassadors.
Luisa Banchoff, a 17-year-old senior at Washington-Lee High School, was one of five teenagers this week to be appointed literary ambassadors to the National Student Poets Program. The National Student Poets were selected from a pool of outstanding ninth- through eleventh-grade writers who received a national Scholastic Art & Writing Award for poetry through the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, according to a news release. The teens will serve one-year terms as literary ambassadors for poetry through readings and workshops at libraries, museums, and schools, the release states. They will also serve as a resource for the U.S. Department of Education and the Library of Congress. They will complete community service projects designed to …

The National Park Service is seeking public input on the placement of potential boathouses along the Potomac River.
The National Park Service, already considering a boathouse zone along the Potomac in Washington, D.C., has set its sites on Arlington, too. Boathouses could one day spot the landscape on either side of the Key Bridge. Tuesday, the agency will hold a public input meeting on "proposed siting and construction of a public facility for non-motorized boats on the Virginia shoreline of the Potomac River," according to the project website. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Washington-Lee High School. Congress tasked the National Park Service in 1998 with identifying sites in Arlington and in 2002 the agency published a feasibility study for the area.
