Z Burger Opening Soon in Virginia Square

The DC-based Z Burger will open at 3325 Wilson Boulevard.

The DC burger chain Z Burger is expected to open within the next month in the Virginia Square area.  “Arlington County is one of the best locations as far as business goes,” said the restaurant’s co-founder Peter Tabibian. The restaurant’s fourth location is three years in the making, much of the time spent obtaining the necessary permits to renovate the 3,500-square-foot building that once housed a video service shop, Tabibian said. Z Burger features burgers (of course), fries, and 75 different milkshake flavors. Onions for the onion rings are cut daily and hot dogs served are Hebrew National hot dogs, Tabibian said. Tabibian, who founded the restaurant with business partner Mohammad Esfahani, got his start in the business working at a …

I predict this "burger" fad has about nine months of calendar life left. Expect a fair number of unoccupied store fronts where these places used to be in summer 2014.   more ›

Police: Two Men Charged in Suspected Meth Lab Bust

Officers initially called over domestic dispute.

Two men were charged with attempting to manufacture methamphetamine after police were called to an Arlington apartment Monday night. It started at about 9:30 p.m. Monday when police were called to Virginia Square Plaza Apartments, 801 N. Monroe St., in relation to a domestic dispute, said Detective Chris Feltman of the Arlington County Police Department. Police found items on the scene that were “consistent with that of the manufacturing methamphetamine,” Feltman said. Officers called the Arlington County Fire Department’s hazmat team and bomb squad to investigate the suspected meth lab. Three floors of the building were evacuated while fire and police investigators looked inside. Fire officials stayed on the scene until about 1 a.m., said…

Visions for Vacancies

Visions for Vacancies: What Business Belongs Across the Street from Mario's Pizza House?

In this new column, Patch wants your ideas for developing vacant spaces in Arlington.

It's a modern spin on community planning—Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table. Each week we'll present a new vacant building or an empty lot and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use for it. We're calling it Visions for Vacancies. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other zoning jargon. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? Last week, we asked you all what to do with the empty space that used to house the Market Tavern in Clarendon. "News Hound" commented, "How about something for regular people like a Dunkin Donuts. They have a cafe-style store type which …

Man Jumps from Apartment Balcony, Dies

Suicide happened near the Virginia Square Metro station.

A 32-year-old man jumped to his death from the ninth floor balcony of a residential apartment onto the sidewalk of North Monroe Street near the Virginia Square Metro station shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday. Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said the man, who lived in the apartment, died instantly. No one else was present in the unit when he jumped. The building is located on the 900 block of North Nelson Street, but the man's apartment faced North Monroe Street. The police have ruled the incident a suicide. The suicide caused minimal traffic disruption, but a portion of the sidewalk on North Monroe Street was taped off. Police cleared the scene by 10:22 p.m. that night. Police have not released the man's identity.

Spring Already? 2012 Bike Projects Already Underway

Signs of spring come as new bike share stations and bike racks are installed around Arlington.

The big Capital Bikeshare expansion down the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor announced last year was scheduled to begin in “the spring”. Well, it must be spring, as the new stations are already starting to appear. On top of that, almost 40 new bike racks were recently installed all over Arlington.  With good weather and a bit of luck, it seems the spring infrastructure push for bikes is well underway.  Over the past weekend, the Virginia Square Metro station saw the addition of a 19 space Capital Bikeshare station. The Central Library also received an 11 space station. These two stations represent the furthest westward expansion of the Capital Bikeshare system to date. New stations will be installed as bikes arrive from the manufacturer. The …

Thanks, Ben. And I'm very much in agreement - there's nothing incompatible with enjoying a bike and wanting better maintained streets. As to the Secret Cyclist Cabal, we keep getting together to plan our utter domination of Arlington, but then we get sidetracked by good beer and fun instead.   more ›
