PHOTOS: Virginian Tim Kaine Sworn In to U.S. Senate

Kaine said he is 'rested and ready.'

Tim Kaine was sworn in as the newest senator from Virginia this week. Vice President Joe Biden presided over a mock ceremony after the official one on the Senate floor, and Anne Holton, Kaine's wife, proudly held a Bible as her husband was sworn in as Virginia's junior senator at the U.S. Capitol in Washington. "I feel wonderful — rested and ready," Kaine said at a reception in his honor at the Hart Senate Office Building. "Life doesn't happen unless you are able to listen and compromise. With this beginning of the 113th Congress, the Senate has 15 newcomers... and I've watched group dynamics just as you have, and when you have that much change it opens the windows and rescrambles assumptions." Kaine, a former Virginia governor, then …

Tim Kaine Answers Your Questions

U.S. Senate candidate responds to 10 questions posed by Patch readers in Northern Virginia.

A few weeks ago, we asked Patch readers in Northern Virginia to throw out some questions for George Allen and Tim Kaine, both vying for the U.S. Senate seat in Virginia. So you asked and the candidates answered. Read George Allen's responses here. Tim Kaine's answers, published below, are unedited. 1. There is considerable reporting in the popular media that Social Security and Medicare are in financial ruin and in need of a fix, but every time one person dares to speak-up and suggest constructive measures to save the system, the other candidate attacks that person for being insensitive to the needs of seniors and claims the proponent of modifications wants to dismantle the programs.  How would you address these issues knowing full well …

Point/Counterpoint: Kaine, Allen Talk Social Security

U.S. Senate candidates outline positions in letters to the editor.

Last week, during the 77th anniversary of Social Security, U.S. Senate candidates Tim Kaine and George Allen submitted letters to the editor to Patch sites across Northern Virginia. Kaine, in part, criticized past positions Allen had supported in the Senate: "I reject those privatization plans. They boil down to gambling with the retirement savings of hard working Americans and jeopardize the promise that we’ve made to generations. While we must continue to find common ground on solutions like altering the payroll tax cap to preserve Social Security's long-term integrity, we cannot take a knee jerk approach and push the panic button on a program that’s worked." To read Kaine's complete letter, click here. Allen, two days later, wrote in to…

Kaine Talks Energy Policy at GridPoint in Clarendon

Kaine touts 'all-of-the-above' solution in Arlington stop.

U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Tim Kaine visited the GridPoint headquarters in Clarendon on Thursday as part of a tour across Virginia to promote his energy plan, which he and his campaign are calling "an all-of-the-above" solution. In a brief town hall meeting with employees afterward, he said that includes energy conservation, investment in research and innovation, exploratory drilling for natural gas off Virginia's coastline, moving from coal to cleaner forms of energy and supporting nuclear power. "Solutions like this are part of that focus," he said after seeing a demonstration of how GridPoint helps major companies reduce the amount of energy they use. Kaine also advocated ending about $2.5 billion in subsidies to major oil …

Kaine Courts Latino Voters at Bilingual Event

The U.S. Senate candidate met with members of the Latino community during a campaign stop in Arlington on Friday.

U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine switched back and forth between his native English and Spanish—a language he learned on an extended mission trip to Honduras—during a campaign event in Arlington on Friday. The former Virginia governor talked to approximately 50 Latinos about registering Latino voters, voter apathy and immigration issues at the Salsa Room on Columbia Pike. It marked Kaine's 60th roundtable discussion with Virginians since January. "I really believe I need to be—and we need to be—voices of practical optimism," Kaine said. "We need an optimistism injection in this country...to counter a lot of the negativity and doom and gloom...that sometimes gets manufactured." Kaine will face-off against Republican candidate George Allen, …

Marco Rubio Supports Allen in Senate Bid

The Florida senator campaigned with Allen at a small flower shop in Arlington on Thursday morning.

George Allen got help from one of the brightest young stars in the Republican party on Thursday morning. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio publically endorsed Allen, a former U.S. senator and governor, in the Virginia U.S. Senate race, calling it one of the most important congressional races this year. Allen will face off in the general election against former Gov. Tim Kaine for the Senate seat which will be vacated by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) who announced last year he will not seek re-election. Rubio's endorsement, staged at Company Flowers in North Arlington, comes just days after Allen clinched the Republican nomination in a four-way party primary with 66 percent of the vote. "It's not just for the State of Virginia that we need George Allen," …
