The man suspected of throwing a Molotov cocktail into the food court of the Ballston Common Mall has been charged with arson in federal court. "These are arson charges," said Peter Carr, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Virginia. "There's nothing in the court document that says 'terrorism.' A world-renowned earthquake engineer who spent more than 30 years with the National Science Foundation engaged in a five-year scheme to pocket thousands of dollars in gifts and fraudulent payments, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday. Shih-Chi Liu, 73, of Silver Spring, Md., pleaded guilty to a single count of making a false statement in federal court Wednesday as part of a plea deal that protects him from further prosecution. Liu joined the Arlington-based National Science Foundation (NSF) in 1975 and spent much of his career there as program director for its Earthquake Hazards Mitigation Program. Stephanie Schwab changed her plea in federal district court on Thursday.
Stephanie Schwab, dubbed the 'Blond Bandit' after her alleged crime spree last November, pleaded guilty Thursday to some of the felony charges against her, changing the not guilty pleas she entered two months ago. In pleading guilty, Schwab will accept a plea agreement from the U.S. Attorney's Office to drop some of the charges associated with the case. In accepting the plea agreement, Schwab waives her right to a jury trial. Sentencing has been scheduled for July 6. Initially, Schwab was indicted on six charges related to a 13-day crime spree throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland: two counts of bank robbery, one count of attempted bank robbery and three counts of transporting stolen vehicles across state lines.
