Kaine Talks Rail, Economy and Bipartisanship

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.

U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Interesting point. Why exactly does NATO still exist? The Soviet Union's Warsaw Pact--NATO's reason for being --disappeared over 20 years ago. And NATO--i.e. the British and their American shills--have initiated several no-win wars in the meantime. Hmm.   more ›

Building Talent Key To U.S. Growth, Kaine Says

Virginia U.S. Senate candidate talks small business, education, jobs in Vienna at Tuesday roundtable

For the last two years, Pallabi Saboo's firm has had 35 unfilled positions. The company has been ready to move forward with the hires since the jobs, largely software engineering positions, became open — it just hasn't been able to find the talent to fill them. The Chief Executive Officer of the McLean-based Harmonia, Inc., was one of 30 women minority business leaders who met with former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine on Tuesday in the Tysons area of Vienna, many of whom said talent, education and access to capital were the biggest roadblocks to their companies succcess. "It's not sexy to be a engineer in high school," another woman said. "So how are they going to get into college [and pursue a career there]? We need to do …

U.S. tech companies really don't want to hire Americans and would rather hire foreign nationals (except for projects involving national security) and bring them here on temporary work visas. That's been going on for decades. That's why I dropped out of IT and went into sales. Tim Kaine talks like a Democrat but acts like another Harvard lawyer. I was deeply disappointed with his performance as …   more ›

Kaine Meets with Business Leaders, Lays Out Economic Agenda

The former governor and U.S. Senate candidate toured Courthouse-based OPower and called that company's story "inspirational."

A little over five years ago, Dan Yates and Alex Laskey were trying to figure out where they should start their business — OPower, a business that would work with utility companies to help their customers conserve energy and save money. “Consistently, going from person to person, we got feedback that Virginia was a great place to start a business,” Yates told a small crowd of Northern Virginia business leaders Wednesday. “That’s an applause line,” U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Tim Kaine interjected. The crowd chuckled and complied. Kaine and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., toured OPower before meeting with more than 30 area business leaders last week. It was the first day of Kaine’s two-week tour of Virginia in which he’s laying out …

All in the Family: Anne Holton Campaigns for Husband Tim Kaine

Both a daughter and wife of Virginia governors, Holton embarked on a listening tour of Northern Virginia on Saturday in support of her husband's candidacy for the U.S Senate.

Former Virginia first lady Anne Holton is going full speed ahead campaigning for husband Tim Kaine, the former governor who hopes to get elected to the U.S. Senate come November. Most polls show a race between Democrat Kaine and probable GOP candidate George Allen as "neck and neck" as Holton herself put it Saturday. Married more than 25 years, Holton and Kaine first met when both were students at Harvard Law School. Today Anne is a wife, mother and lawyer, and a campaigner, a role she said she will increase as the election nears. She traveled to Northern Virginia Saturday from her family's home in Richmond, making stops in Leesburg, Vienna and Reston. In Vienna, Holton criss-crossed the town on a blustery spring day, visiting owners and …

New Poll: Women Back Kaine, Men Back Allen

Quinnipiac University poll shows that Kaine holds sizable lead among Virginia women.

Democrat Tim Kaine holds a sizable lead among Virginia women in a match-up with Republican George Allen, a new poll out Tuesday morning shows. The poll, by Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., shows that 49 percent of women back Kaine while 40 percent back Allen; 48 percent of men backed Allen while 46 percent backed Kaine. "Virginia's U.S. Senate race has been too-close-to-call from the get-go," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, in a news release. "It remains a squeaker and is likely to remain that way until the November election. An Obama victory in the presidential race would help Kaine, while if the Republican carries the state in November that would help Allen."  From March 13 …

Arlington Political Donors Giving Much Less in '12

Contributions still many times the national average by ZIP code.

While political contributions out of Arlington County so far during the 2012 election cycle amount to only one-third of what was donated four years ago, contributions made here are still many times the national average. Eleven ZIP codes cover Arlington. Political contributions by ZIP code available at OpenSecrets.org show that collectively Arlington County residents have given about $7.2 million so far this election cycle. That’s a huge drop from the $22.3 million contributed four years ago. Much of the difference can be accounted by the fact that this is a heavily blue area and President Barack Obama is running uncontested for his party’s nomination. The Obama-Clinton rivalry drew voters, and their wallets, out in droves during the last …
