Arlington Students Study the Civil War on Wheels

The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile made an appearance at Thomas Jefferson Middle School this week.

Arlington fourth-grade students experienced an interactive Civil War exhibit brought right to their front door. The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile, based in Richmond, rolled into Thomas Jefferson Middle School earlier this week. “They’ve done a great job with engaging students,” said Diana Hasuly-Ackman, supervisor of social studies at Arlington Public Schools. “This is the time of year when they study the Civil War so the timing is just about right.” The 53-foot trailer parked right in the school’s parking lot Monday through Wednesday, as students from around the county paid visits at predetermined times. Students Suspended After Allegedly Bringing Knives to Middle School

The Arlington County Police Department released information on this incident today.

Two students allegedly brought knives to Thomas Jefferson Middle School last week. The students were charged and suspended from the school on Thursday, according to information the Arlington County Police Department released today. “A school administrator witnessed suspicious behavior and upon searching them found the weapons,” said Arlington County police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. One knife was found on one of the students and another knife was found in a student’s locker, Sternbeck said. He would not say whether the students indicated if they were planning on using the weapons at the school. Police do not typically release the names of juveniles. Electronics Decrease, Hazardous Materials Increase at Arlington Recycling Event

The twice-a-year E-CARE was this weekend at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

The biannual Arlington Environmental Collection and Recycling Event, or E-CARE, returned to Thomas Jefferson Middle School this weekend, drawing an estimated 1,239 to the event, according to Arlington County Department of Environmental Services spokeswoman Shannon Whalen McDaniel. E-CARE allows county residents to dispose of hazardous materials like paint, solvents, garden chemicals and items containing mercury, and to recycle electronics, bikes, small metal items, shoes, eyeglasses and certain medical equipment. The county collected an estimated 11.5 tons of electronics, more than filling one tractor trailer — a bit more than half of what was collected at the same event in April.
