County will establish a neighborhood advisory council and designate a homeless service center liaison in an effort to minimize its impact on the surrounding community.
A year-round homeless service center on two floors of the seven-story office building at 2020 14th St. N. in the Courthouse community has received final approval from the Arlington County Board. For advocates of ending homelessness, it was a victory a long time in the making. It advances Arlington's goal of providing the services needed to move more of the area's homeless into permanent housing. And it concentrates those services in a single place that's open all year as opposed to the current emergency winter shelter, about a block away, that's open only during the winter. For some residents of Woodbury Heights, the condominium building next door to the planned center, it was the latest move by Arlington County to balance the good of the …

County offices are closed Wednesday due to snow.
An Arlington Planning Commission public hearing on the proposed year-round homeless service center in the Courthouse community has been postponed until 7 p.m. Thursday due to inclement weather. The commission originally intended to hear the matter tonight, though Arlington county and schools offices are closed thanks to the snow storm. The hearing is on the county's application — to itself — to put a dormitory in the seven-story building at 2020 14th St. N. It's part of the larger process of converting two floors of the building into a year-round comprehensive services center. The county bought the building under threat of condemnation for about $27 million in November. The plan has caused some heartburn to Courthouse-area residents, …

County bought Courthouse-area building in November.
The Arlington County Fire Department responded to a commercial fire alarm at about 7 p.m. Thursday at 14th Street North and Courthouse Road. The fire was in a back room of a dry cleaning business, one of three retail establishments in the county-owned Thomas Building. Responders knocked the fire down "pretty quickly," Capt. Gregg Karl told Patch. Karl was unaware of any injuries. At about 7:30 p.m., firefighters remained on scene checking to make sure the fire didn't spread to adjacent businesses or nearby buildings. "It sounds like it was pretty much contained to a back room," Karl said. Damage estimates were not immediately available. Arlington County bought the Thomas Building, at 2020 14th St. N., in November to convert to county …

Arlington County acquired the Thomas Building last month under threat of condemnation.
Arlington County held the first in a series of public input meetings Wednesday night on the design of the planned year-round homeless service center for the Courthouse community. By coincidence or by design, the evening doubled as a first attempt to broker peace between the county government and people in the neighborhood who feel they've been ignored, their concerns neglected. In some ways, it was a victory for the county that no one threw their hands up in the air and left, frustrated. Kurt Larrick, the communications manager for the county's Department of Human Services, said he was "encouraged" to see "the Hatfields and the McCoys" sitting at the same table, talking through their concerns. "It's not lip service," he said. "It's genuine…

Two of the building's seven floors will be used for a comprehensive year-round homeless shelter.
Arlington County now owns the Thomas Building, the seven-story office building on the corner of Courthouse Road and 14th Street North. The Arlington County Board approved buying the property, at 2020 14th St. N. in the Courthouse community, for about $27 million on Saturday. The county closed on the deal today, according to a news release. County leaders want to renovate the building and use two floors for a year-round homeless service center, plus county office space and storage. In all, acquisition and renovation is projected to cost $46.2 million over the next five years. The homeless shelter, in particular, has drawn the ire of neighboring residential property owners who have expressed concerns about their safety and, in some cases, …

Elected officials will vote Saturday on whether to buy a seven-story building in the Courthouse community. Plans call for spending $42.6 million over five years on acquisition, renovation.
Following nearly a year of negotiations, Arlington County is poised to acquire the seven-story Thomas Building and turn two floors of it into a comprehensive year-round homeless service center. The Arlington County Board on Saturday will consider a recommendation to buy the building at 2020 14th St. N. in the Courthouse community for about $27 million and begin renovations. Over the next five years, the project is expected to cost $42.6 million, which includes financial assistance to some of the building's business tenants, who will be forced to relocate. Much of the building eventually will be used for county office space, but it’s the homeless center proposition that has drawn outrage from neighbors concerned about its proximity to …
