Campaign Urges Drivers, Cyclists, Pedestrians to Watch Out for Each Other

The Street Smart campaign planned an Arlington awareness event for Tuesday afternoon.

Through May 13, police in Northern Virginia, Washington and Maryland will put an extra focus on drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists who violate traffic safety laws as part of the Street Smart campaign. Motorists and cyclists who do not stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, along with pedestrians who jaywalk, can face fines of up to $500. The campaign will be responsible for a series of "tired faces" ads that will appear on buses and transit stops throughout the region — faces with large tire treads overlaid on them designed to remind people to look out for each other. It follows the death of Ruby Whitfield, a district resident who was killed in March as she was crossing a street after a church meeting. Last year saw 70 pedestrian and bicycle…

Tejada Elected Arlington Board Chairman; Housing, Healthy Lifestyles Among Priorities

New chairman announces series of town halls, town walks and other initiatives.

Walter Tejada became the new Arlington County Board chairman on Tuesday and unveiled an agenda that includes an increased focus on affordable housing and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Tejada was unanimously elected to the leadership post, which rotates annually, at the board's traditional New Year's Day organizational meeting. "The heart of Arlington is our community, our inclusion, diversity, mutual respect and sustainability," Tejada said in his remarks. Arlington Deploys Crossing Guards, Police In and Near School Zones

Arlington County Board chairwoman: Up to 1,500 additional students will be walking, riding a bike or riding in a car to school this year.

With more students expected to be walking or riding a bike to school, Arlington County has announced several new awareness and safety measures. Up to 1,500 additional students will be walking, riding a bike or riding in a car to school, according to a statement by County Board Chairwoman Mary Hynes. The county has added extra crossing guards at intersections and police will be monitoring driving behavior near schools, Hynes stated. Beginning today, police officers, sheriff's deputies, crossing guards and public service aides will be directing traffic in and around school zones across the county, according to a county news release.
