Favola: Stop Playing Politics with Healthcare

Patch is happy to consider opinion articles for publication. We reserve the right to edit for accuracy, clarity and brevity.

The following opinion column was submitted by state Sen. Barbara Favola, D-Arlington. The Virginia General Assembly will soon enact legislation that directs the State Corporation Commission to perform plan management functions for participation in a federal health benefits exchange (HBE) program. The exchange will function as a virtual marketplace where families can shop and compare insurance policies, with the help of a consumer navigator, to find the appropriate policy for their needs.   Thanks to new rules, shoppers in the exchange can be assured that any policy they purchase will cover important categories of care, including mental health, pre- and post-natal care, and prescription drug coverage. But, if Governor McDonnell has his way…

Thank you Ms. Favola. Having recently tried to take advantage of provisions under the current affordable health care act, I have found that it is not working as well as it should and is selective in the benefits it offers including birth control methods.   more ›

Op-Ed: Pretend Gun Laws

Patch is happy to consider opinion articles for publication. We reserve the right to edit for accuracy, clarity and brevity.

The following opinion column was submitted by John Harrison, a former teacher at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, and a professional lecturer. Although gun control proponents call all homicides "murder," they are not. Murder is an illegal killing; homicide is a killing of one human by another. According to the FBI, in 2010 there were almost 700 justifiable homicides, most with a gun. Law enforcement accounted for about 400 of those; citizens killed about 300. Police usually acted after a crime; citizens usually acted to stop a crime in progress. According to statistics collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans overall are far less likely — down 28 percent…

This might be my favorite line by the "professor" 'The authors of the Second Amendment were well aware of the risks associated with essentially allowing every able-bodied citizen to have a weapon, but they thought that the risks to free men of not having such weapons was worse.' Ironic since slaves were not allowed to firearms and historical evidence shows that the 2nd Amendment might have been …   more ›

Op-Ed: New Arlington Chamber Chairman Implores Members to 'Pay it Forward'

Patch is happy to consider opinion articles for publication. We reserve the right to edit for accuracy, clarity and brevity.

The following opinion column was submitted to Patch by new Arlington Chamber of Commerce Chairman David DeCamp. For my initial opportunity to write in this space I will open with a theme to help us all thrive. Be attentive, wherever you are, for opportunities to help another chamber member. Imagine the power of this pleading. If each of the hundreds of Arlington Chamber of Commerce members helped just three other chamber members every couple of weeks the results would be huge and powerful. Multiply this kind of goodwill and imagine how it will come back around. We can help our friends accomplish their goals. And people who care about us would have our backs and help us accomplish our goals. To be more specific, we can use our personal and …

Op-Ed: County Board Should Recognize Opposition to Columbia Pike Trolley

Matt Wavro, a Republican running for Arlington County Board, says residents 'deserve better.'

The Wavro campaign distributed this piece to media outlets Wednesday afternoon. The residents of Columbia Pike and Crystal City deserve a better plan for the future of our community than a blind rush toward the vanity project that is the planned circulator trolley. The current plan to spend what could end up being nearly $500 million installing two trolleys is not the right plan for Columbia Pike, Crystal City or the region. I think we all support the goal of a pedestrian friendly Main Street on Columbia Pike and an active, accessible Crystal City. The guidelines in place for such development — the Form Based Code on Columbia Pike and the Crystal City Sector Plan in Crystal City — are starting to change the development dynamic in these …

Call the Pike Trollet a "Vanity Project" or a "White Elephant", the county board is trying to shove it bown our throats as a way to put public funds into private/corporate pockets. If they really want to know how the county residents feel about it, put it up on a reforendum vote ! Too many lies about funding, the State can't even come up with funds to finish the Metro line to Dulles, and Federal …   more ›

Op-Ed: O'Connell Students, Alumni Deserve Answers

Grad 'proud' of how school community has rallied to support teacher who was fired.

The following op-ed was submitted to Clarendon Patch last week. Links and photo added by Patch. After the controversial decision this month to fire a highly respected member of the Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School faculty, the administration has received numerous complaints and is being criticized by thousands from the O’Connell community. A protest on April 19 received local media attention, but officials have remained relatively silent on the reason behind the decision. The school, on Little Falls Road in Arlington, is a private Catholic school of roughly 1,200 students. The firing of history teacher John Harrison follows a string of recent controversial decisions to let go of other greatly appreciated faculty members. The pattern …

Looks like our fair Bishop O'Connell and the Arlington Diocese will in fact be sharing their side of the story in court. Looking forward to it.   more ›
