Pets help you tackle your effort to lose weight, reduce stress and other resolutions.
The Animal Welfare League of Arlington in Shirlington released the following note this week about how pets can help be a part of your new year’s resolution plan. “Resolving to adopt a shelter pet will not only improve the quality of life for that animal, but will also enhance your own,” according to the shelter. Read the full letter from the Animal Welfare League below: Lose Weight, Get Healthy: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pets can reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and feelings of loneliness. Nearly 13.6 percent of Arlingtonians are obese, compared to the 24 percent national average. Adopting a dog as a workout partner can provide that needed motivation for daily exercise. …

The Arlington area is full of runners and running events to get in shape.
Running is an inexpensive and flexible way to keep a New Year's resolution to get more active or lose a few pounds. The Arlington area is lucky to have great outdoor running options and plenty of events to train toward if you need a deadline to help you meet your goal. The Mayo Clinic offers a free online training schedule developed by Olympian Jeff Galloway to get you 5K run ready in just seven weeks, even if you are a beginner. A 5K run is 3.1 miles. "Don't be daunted by the distance. A 5K run is a great distance for a beginner. And you can prepare for a 5K run in just two months," according to the Mayo Clinic website. Im with Caroline, apartments in Arlington are sky high for the regular joe working stiff. Unless something changes soon in 20 years all the people who serve your meals cut your grass, paint your house, so on so on. The labor force will migrate in and out each night tying up the roads even worse and making Arlington one giant elitist neighborhood.   more ›
