National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 2012

Watch the ceremony online or visit the tree throughout the holiday season.

The National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony ticket lottery has closed, but people around the country and the world can still watch it online Thursday, Dec. 6 starting at 4:30 p.m. According to the National Park Service (NPS) website: "This year, experience the magic of the National Christmas Tree Lighting any time you want without ever leaving your home. Watch the pre-show and tree lighting ceremony starting at 4:30 pm ET on Thursday, Dec.  6. And following the live online stream, the show will be available anytime on-demand right here." NPS planted the new tree on the Ellipse in late October just before Hurricane Sandy hit; the previous tree died of transplant shock. Apply This Week to See National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Apply starting on Thursday.

Potential spectators can apply this week for a chance to attend the 2012 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony that takes place near the White House on Dec. 6. The lottery opens online at 10 a.m. Thursday and ends at 10 a.m. Oct. 29. Winners will be notified via email. The event is free to attend. Now in its 90th year, the president speaks at the ceremony, where a military band and seasonal artists perform. In addition to the National Christmas Tree, 56 smaller trees make up the Christmas Pathway of Peace — one for each state, five territories and Washington, D.C.
