Explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday could affect security measures at Washington-area races.
The explosions that killed three and injured more than 100 people at the Boston Marathon on Monday could have security implications for the Marine Corps Marathon in October. The Marine Corps Marathon begins on the grounds of the Pentagon and the course moves through Arlington and Washington. In 2010, the event had heightened security in light of a shooting at Marine Corps-related facilities earlier that year. At the time, Col. Daniel J. Choike said Marines were working with local law enforcement agencies and the FBI to ensure that "additional measures" were taken in what was already a "robust security plan." School had more than 200 students participate in fall run.
Claremont Immersion School will be honored Wednesday morning for its participation in the Marine Corps Marathon Healthy Kids Fun Run. Claremont, at 4700 S. Chesterfield Road in South Arlington, is one of five Virginia schools to be honored with the Healthy Schools Award. "The Healthy Kids Fun Run is consistently growing in participation as parents, schools and communities reinforce the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness among youth," Marine Corps Marathon Director Rick Nealis said in a news release. "The Healthy School Award recognizes the schools that have excelled in their efforts to encourage active kids." The Marine Corps Marathon takes place Sunday, and the following Arlington County roads will be affected.
The 37th Annual Marine Corps Marathon will take over the streets of Arlington for most of Sunday. The race will start at approximately 7:55 a.m., with the course officially ending by 3 p.m. Arlington County police will temporarily close the following roads for the race: Street parking in the area will be restricted. Motorists should be on the lookout for temporary No Parking signs. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed. If your vehicle is towed from a public street, call 703-558-2222. Arlington police officer says each run pushes him to try to do better.
Arlington County Police Cpl. Steve Troyano is running his 10th marathon on Saturday, the 37th Annual Marine Corps Marathon through Arlington. "Three years ago I decided to try and run a marathon just to see if I could and then I got hooked," Troyano said. Troyano has been an officer with Arlington County for about 12 years and made the news earlier this year for delivering a baby during a traffic stop. "I think I just did my job," Troyano told Patch at the time. In between delivering babies and being an officer, Troyano finds time to run an average of 35 miles a week throughout the year to train. "I try and build up to 23 miles before the marathon then work back down," Troyano said. More than 40,000 people have registered for the Marine …

They began running for different reasons, but Sunday they ran with the same goal -- finish their first Marine Corps Marathon.
The 36th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on Sunday is limited to 30,000 participants. Yet registration sold out in record time -- 28 hours, four minutes. Three first-time MCM runners who trained with Potomac River Running (Burke and Reston) gave an overview of their preparation. Angeline Hannachi of Fairfax (first marathon) I began running last year in order to further my weight loss goals. Prior to July 2010, I had never run more than a couple miles at a time, and I have always struggled with my weight. Fun Runs and free injury screenings attract men and women on the move.
Pacers, a DC-area running supplies retailer, has positioned itself as a hub for those who pound the pavement in Clarendon. Thursday nights bring a slew of activity to the store with packs of five-mile fun runners as well as some walking wounded looking for advice. Injuries Abound With the Marine Corps Marathon just around the bend, many Arlingtoners have been pushing themselves in anticipation -- some who've been around the block a couple times and some who are looking for a new challenge. It's great to see the MCM still going strong after 36 years. I ran the first one in 1976 and we had just 1200 runners. It truely is the "People's Marathon", no prize money for professional runners. The Marines do an awesome job taking care of all the runners. more ›
