Event is Tuesday night at Kenmore Middle School
U.S. Rep. Jim Moran will host a community form on immigration forum Tuesday night in the Kenmore Middle School auditorium. An estimated 10 million to 11 million undocumented immigrants live in this country, and reforming the system to "resolve the status" of these individuals could add more than $800 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product over the next decade and create more than 100,000 jobs per year, according to Moran's office. The congressman will be joined by Arlington County Board Chairman Walter Tejada and representatives from the Center for American Progress, the National Immigration Law Center and the American Immigrants Lawyers Association. The forum will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kenmore Middle School, 200 S. Carlin …

The following opinion column was submitted by U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va. Moran is a member of the Congressional Autism Caucus. We recognize the month of April as Autism Awareness and Understanding month. Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, is the fastest growing serious developmental disorder in the United States, affecting nearly two million Americans. One in 88 children is on the autism spectrum by age 8, and boys are five times more likely to have an ASD. A new survey by the Centers for Disease Control indicates that the instance of ASD may actually be higher. And here in Northern Virginia, we are experiencing the prevalence of ASD firsthand. Arlington Public Schools released a report showing a 52 percent increase in enrollment of …

The longtime Virginia congressman moving back to the same Alexandria neighborhood where he launched his political career more than 30 years ago.
U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th) is returning to live in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, the same community where he launched his political career more than 30 years ago. “It’s about coming home,” said Moran, who announced he was moving to Del Ray at Monday’s Del Ray Business Association luncheon. “I’ve always appreciated the way the community embraced me as a single father and supported me when I first ran for council in 1979 coming out of the Del Ray Citizens Association.” Moran, who served as mayor of Alexandria from 1985 to 1990, is currently living in Arlington County’s Shirlington neighborhood. The 12-term congressman said his son, Patrick, recently moved out of the apartment, leaving Moran on his own. “I don’t need a two-bedroom …

'Preventing Another Newtown: A Conversation on Gun Violence in America' was held at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington.
A forum on preventing gun violence Monday night turned into a heated debate on gun laws. “At what point do you stop infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens and start enforcing the laws that are in place?” one gun rights advocate asked U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., who hosted the event in Arlington. "When the death of innocent people is reduced,” Moran retorted. “Then we will probably be less aggressive.” The forum — "Preventing Another Newtown: A Conversation on Gun Violence in America” — featured a mix of panelists, including former federal agent David Chipman, who is an adviser to Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook, and Jonathan Lowy, the director of the Legal Action Project, Brady Center to Prevent …

Sequestration could affect every traveler at airports nationwide, say U.S. Reps. Jim Moran, Gerry Connolly and U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine speaking from Reagan National Airport Monday.
Federal sequestration could mean fewer flights and increased wait times at airports, Virginia lawmakers said Monday. In addition to flight delays caused by sequestration, it threatens to close small- to mid-sized airports across the country. The massive, indiscriminate spending cuts Congress put in motion to force a budget compromise would cut $600 million from the Federal Aviation Administration if they go into effect Friday. Jobs on the Line Under sequestration, the FAA would have to furlough employees for 11 days — with as much as 10 percent of its workforce furloughed on any given day — and the agency would be unable to hire replacements for the 30 percent of its workers eligible to retire. Up to 2,200 air traffic controllers would be …

Activist who released Patrick Moran video would not cooperate with investigation, according to police.
Patrick Moran, the congressman's son who was caught on tape seemingly giving advice on how to skirt voter identification laws, will not face any criminal charges, the Arlington County Police Department announced Thursday. Authorities have concluded their three-month investigation into election offense allegations against Moran, son of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, a Democrat who represents parts of Northern Virginia. The allegations stemmed from a video released in late October by conservative activist James O'Keefe, whose methods and productions have been called into question in the past. The younger Moran resigned from his father's reelection campaign within hours of the video's release. Moran, 23, lives in South Arlington. Patrick Moran and his …

Totally agree. Does it bother anyone in a decision making role that the U.S. is headed for a population of 550-600 million in 2100 (up from 315 million now) and farmland is being paved over as fast as plans for new housing and commercial development can be approved?   more ›
