Yorktown High School student's work will be displayed at U.S. Capitol for one year.
More than 60 pieces of art created by high school students across the 8th Congressional District will be on display at the Artisphere in Rosslyn through June 17. The exhibition is the result of the annual Congressional Art Competition, which began in 1982 to give members of Congress a chance to encourage and recognize young artistic talent. "Lady of Rain," a photograph by 18-year-old Ryan Carroll, a Yorktown High School senior, won the contest and will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol along with the winners from other congressional districts across the country. The black-and-white photograph depicts a woman on a beach in Massachusetts looking across the water toward distant smokestacks. She's holding an umbrella, unfurled, which itself …

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.
Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…

J. Patrick Murray's campaign lists almost $30,000 cash on hand; FEC notes debts of $38,000
The campaign of J. Patrick Murray, the sole Republican candidate running against Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District), is running low on funds, according to the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. An FEC disclosure form states that Murray has: "What you see is long-term debt that is money I loaned to the campaign," Murray told Patch on Monday. "That's my money, largely from the first time I ran. We don't owe anybody anything. We have cash on hand and continue to do more." Murray ran against Moran, an 11-term incumbent, in 2010, taking 37.31 percent of the vote. Murray said his campaign is "working hard to raise more" funds and plans to hold a fundraiser for his campaign on May 22 with Virginia …
McAuliffe: A year is 'long enough' to run for governor.
For former Democratic National Committee Chairman and Clinton confidant Terry McAuliffe, a second run for governor seems less like a question of “Will he?” and more like one of “When will he announce?” “We’ve got some big races first,” McAuliffe said in an interview Sunday at the opening of President Barack Obama's re-election campaign field office in Arlington. The enthusiastic McAuliffe pointed out that he’s appeared at more than 430 events in the last year and says his No. 1 focus is to make sure Obama is re-elected and former Gov. Tim Kaine wins the U.S. Senate seat he’s after. “I want everybody focused on the president and Tim Kaine,” he said. “Right after the November election, we’ll have something to say.” McAuliffe is hosting a …

Campaign opened Arlington field office Sunday.
President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign opened field offices in Falls Church, Suffolk and Arlington this weekend, ratcheting up its presence in the critical swing state of Virginia. The campaign is gearing up its supporters for a bare-knuckle brawl to keep the commonwealth blue. “Guys, it’s game time. They’ve picked their guy. We’ve got a better guy. We just have to make sure everybody knows that,” Yohannes Abraham, the campaign’s deputy national political director, told nearly 200 people Sunday at the opening of the Arlington office. The office is located at 2408 Columbia Pike, immediately next door to Rappahannock Coffee. “We know (Republican Mitt) Romney’s playbook. We saw it during the primary. Him and his allies are going to …

Bruce Shuttleworth had claimed he was unlawfully left off the Democratic primary ballot.
The Virginia State Board of Elections announced Monday evening it would allow a Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Jim Moran on the ballot after initially disqualifying him. Bruce Shuttleworth, an Arlington resident, filed a lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In the lawsuit, he claims Democratic Party officials failed to certify valid signatures his campaign collected from voters residing in the 8th Congressional District, leaving Moran the only candidate to be certified for the ballot. The Washington Post reported Monday evening that Justin Riemer, deputy secretary of the State Board of Elections, said the state Democratic party had certified Shuttleworth’s name. Riemer did not say …

Political newcomer making bid in Virginia's 8th Congressional District.
Jason Howell has no previous government experience, but that hasn’t stopped him from aiming high in his political aspirations. Howell, who is running as an independent for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, the seat currently held by Democrat Jim Moran, said Congress is where the problem lies. “When there’s a fire in the kitchen, you don’t go to the bedroom to put it out,” Howell said. “That’s where the biggest challenge is. There are zero independents right now in the House of Representatives, and that’s part and parcel [to] that sort of gridlock that we have. ... In the mix, the issues that are really important, the ones that matter, kind of get lost, and the people that you’re supposed to be representing aren’t represented as much …

Democrat throws support behind challenger Bruce Shuttleworth.
Franconia Democrat Will Radle has ended his bid for a congressional seat and thrown his support behind former competitor Bruce Shuttleworth. Radle was running in the Democratic primary for the seat currently held by Democrat Rep. Jim Moran in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District. In a telephone interview Wednesday, he said he was putting the needs of the community ahead of his personal ambitions. “I don’t want to divide the opposition to the incumbent,” Radle said. Radle commended Shuttleworth, a Democrat, on his “commitment to service, past and present.” He also said he admired his “approach to listening to people (and) his general interest in helping to create solutions to challenges.” Radle said in an email Wednesday announcing his …

Congressman visited Afghanistan-Pakistan region in February.
U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., called for the accelerated withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan on Monday from the House floor. "Ultimately, Afghanistan's future will be determined by Afghans, not Americans," Moran said. Moran traveled to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region Feb. 18 to 26 as part of the bipartisan House Democracy Partnership, according to a news release. "During the visit, the delegation worked with counterparts in the respective parliaments to deepen bilateral relations with a focus on strengthening democratic institutions in the Middle East region," the release states.

Congressman introduced legislation with Rep. Wolf to alleviate suffering in Sudan.
Congressman Jim Moran, who represents Northern Virginia's 8th District, was arrested Friday morning for crossing a police line along with actor George Clooney and several civil rights leaders at a protest on the steps of the Embassy of Sudan in D.C. "We are not here for any economic or partisan political agenda, but there is a moral imperative involved here," Moran said. "We who benefit every day from being born into lives of prosperity have some obligation to speak out for those who suffer every day for the accident of their birth." The group was taken to the District 2 Police Station and were expected to be released soon. "They probably have pretty good lawyers, so we shouldn't hold them for more than a couple hours," said a D.C. police …

Of course, Mr Howell is vague. He appears to be a shill for Rep. Moran's campaign. I am amused that Jim thinks this foolishness is necessary to get him re-elected. Obama must be much weaker than reported in northern VA.   more ›
