Low turnout expected today.
Voters today will decide who is on the ballot for congressional races that will be decided in November. In the Democratic primary, incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Moran faces political newcomer Bruce Shuttleworth of Arlington in Virginia's 8th Congressional District. Voters who choose to participate in today's Republican primary will weigh in on one of the hottest Senate races in the country and pick the GOP candidate to face Democrat Tim Kaine in November. Shortly before 11:30 a.m., Arlington County Registrar Linda Lindberg was trying to fight off boredom. "I think it's going to be another light turnout day for us," Lindberg said. "The phones have not been busy for us at all — either from the precincts or from the voters." Lindberg said she …

Republican primary to decide the party's Senate nominee; Democratic primary will determine the House candidate for November.
Voters on Tuesday will decide two congressional primaries that will determine who appears on the November ballot, sure to get plenty of attention thanks to Virginia's status as a battleground for the U.S. presidency. Voters who choose to cast ballots in the Democratic primary on Tuesday will determine whether incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, a Democrat, moves one step closer to a 12th term. Political newcomer Bruce Shuttleworth is challenging Moran in the Democratic primary. The winner will face Republican Patrick Murray in November. People who elect to vote in Tuesday's Republican primary will have a say in one of the hottest Senate races in the country. That four-way contest — between Ex-Sen. George Allen, tea party leader Jamie Radtke, …

E.W. Jackson hopes his supporters make him the winner in Tuesday's Senate GOP primary.
With congressional primary elections scheduled next week, Patch is profiling each of the four Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate, who will face each other on the ballot June 12. On the face of it, most political observers might count out E.W. Jackson in Virginia's Senate GOP primary on Tuesday. But Jackson, who was raised in foster homes until he was 9, eventually joined the Marines and graduated from Harvard Law School, never gives up. "I think I'm going to win. I really do," he told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I believe that we're going to see a tremendous upset on June 12." Jackson is up against former senator and Gov. George Allen, Jamie Radtke and Del. Bob Marshall. If elected, Jackson has said he wants to help get …

Home-schooling mom of three says mounting federal debt motivated her to run for office.
With congressional primary elections scheduled next week, Patch is profiling each of the four Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate, who will face each other on the ballot June 12. Tea party member Jamie Radtke of Chesterfield County announced in December 2010 she was running for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Jim Webb, who is retiring from the U.S. Senate. Before running for the U.S. Senate, Radtke was best known for co-founding and chairing the Virginia Federation of Tea Party Patriots. She organized a tea party convention that attracted nearly 3,000 participants to Richmond. The home-schooling mom of three grew up in a military family (her father was an F-4 pilot in the Air Force), …

Quinnipiac University poll shows that Kaine holds sizable lead among Virginia women.
Democrat Tim Kaine holds a sizable lead among Virginia women in a match-up with Republican George Allen, a new poll out Tuesday morning shows. The poll, by Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., shows that 49 percent of women back Kaine while 40 percent back Allen; 48 percent of men backed Allen while 46 percent backed Kaine. "Virginia's U.S. Senate race has been too-close-to-call from the get-go," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, in a news release. "It remains a squeaker and is likely to remain that way until the November election. An Obama victory in the presidential race would help Kaine, while if the Republican carries the state in November that would help Allen." From March 13 …

Five things to know about what's going on in and around Arlington this week.
1. The Perfect Pita will open a new store in Rosslyn at 1735 N. Lynn St. in November. 2. Conservative U.S. Senate candidate Jamie Radtke is calling out Republican George Allen for not debating her. Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine are scheduled to debate Dec. 7 in an event sponsored by the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association and the Virginia Associated Press Managing Editors. The Richmond Times-Dispatch opined, "Tea party favorite Jamie Radtke has mounted a legitimate challenge for the GOP and deserves a place in debates that occur before the official tickets are set." Radtke's campaign has included that quote in at least two emails, at least one of them asking for financial contributions. Clarendon Patch and Ballston Patch are not …

Republican Senate candidate speaking at Thursday night events in Annandale, Arlington.
U.S. Senate candidate Jamie Radtke called Virginia’s mandate for girls to be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, or HPV, “offensive” in a phone interview Thursday and said the requirement takes away parental rights. Radtke, a Republican and a former leader of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots, in 2007 fought against the legislation that made the vaccination mandatory. She said she was “frustrated and disappointed” at Republicans who supported the measure. “That’s just an area where it’s very convenient for pharmaceutical companies to get something mandatory – that sure makes the demand of their drug much higher than it would be,” said Radtke, who is speaking tonight in Annandale and Arlington. “I absolutely do not think the state …
