Band consists of Washington-Lee, Yorktown High School students.
Not many 10-year-old olds are enterprising enough to start their own band, let alone stick with it. But the five guys in Safety Third pulled it off. Now, the band — whose members are all ninth-graders at Washington-Lee and Yorktown high schools — have been playing together for four years and have their first CD under their belt. "We've all been good friends since elementary school. So we just thought it would be a fun thing to do," said bassist Gabe Westergren, 14. "We just decided to have this band. And it's gone pretty well." Independent candidate performed song recently during IOTA open mic night.
Jason Howell, an Arlington resident running as an independent candidate in 8th Congressional District, this month took to the stage to deliver his message in a unique way. Howell, who is challenging incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran and Republican Patrick Murray, performed last week during open mic night at IOTA. Howell performed "Congress-Man," a composition inspired by — and to the tune of — Elton John's "Rocket Man." Howell said in an email to Patch that this was one of the ways he was trying to reach people who have otherwise been disengaged from politics. Beer produced in collaboration with the Germantown, Md.-based rock band.
Clutch, a chocolate and black malt brew inspired by the popular rock band out of Germantown, Md., will be among the New Belgium draught beers launching today at IOTA. The drink, which was produced by the brewing company in collaboration with the band, is described as "black as night" and is 80 percent stout and 20 percent dark sour wood beer. The IOTA event is 5 to 9 p.m. today. In addition to Clutch, the bar and music venue will add four other New Belgium brews: Hoptober Golden Ale, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale, Ranger Indian Pale Ale and Fat Tire Amber Ale.
