Commutes Could Get Longer for HOV Drivers on I-66

A ramp connecting I-66 to I-495 will close on Friday, Oct. 12.

Depending on the way you get to work, your morning commute may be getting a little bit longer starting in a few weeks. The HOV ramp connecting the eastbound lanes of Interstate 66 to the Capital Beltway will close following morning rush hour on Friday, Oct. 12 and re-open later this year as an Express Lanes ramp. A spokesman for Virginia Megaprojects explained in a press statement, "HOV-drivers affected by this new traffic pattern are urged to follow highway message signs that will be in place along I-66, approaching I-495.  Drivers should expect additional delays in this area for several weeks, and should allow extra time in their commutes." For details about the Express Lanes, how they work and when they are planned to open for drivers, …

Police: No 'Special Treatment' in Redskins' Meriweather DUI Arrest

Spokesman: Player arrested early Thursday in Arlington County.

Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather was charged with driving under the influence this week after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 66, according to Arlington County police. Shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, an Arlington officer observed a Lincoln going 73 mph on I-66 westbound in the vicinity of North Ohio Street, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. The posted speed limit for that area is 55 mph. The officer pulled the vehicle over and smelled the strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver, who was later identified as Meriweather, Sternbeck said. Meriweather refused to take a breath test and subsequently failed a field sobriety test, Sternbeck said. The football player told the officer that he had been drinking at a nightclub …

Combative Man Creates Wild Incident On I-66

Virginia State Police say a Herndon man was approached by a state police trooper and an Arlington County police officer on I-66, escaped in one of the police cruisers and fought with numerous different officers before he was subdued.

Virginia State Police (VSP) said a 37-year-old Herndon man caused a wild incident on I-66 today when he fought with police, escaped in a police cruiser, and threatened them with a shovel before he eventually was taken into custody. Corinne Geller, VSP spokeswoman, said the incident happened at 11:58 a.m. when VSP Trooper C.T. Grzelak responded to I-66 for a male pedestrian in the eastbound lanes at the 46-mile marker in Prince William County. At about the same time, an Arlington County Police officer pulled up to the scene to assist and when they both approached the man, he became combative, Geller said. Geller said the man, identified as Dexter Gibson of Herndon, started banging on the trooper's patrol car and punched the Arlington …

VDOT Study Could Offer Ideas for Better Travel on I-66

Year-long study will examine navigating the highway by public transportation, bike and roadways.

A Virginia Department of Transportation study now in the public comment phase could offer ways to make commuting along Interstate-66 more efficient. The I-66 Multimodal Study is looking at 11 mobility options — HOV lanes, bicycle and pedestrian corridor access and highway improvements among them — to move commuters along the busy stretch of road between I-495 and the Roosevelt Bridge more quickly. Kanti Srikanth, transportation planning director for VDOT, said the study is also looking at a variety of supportive multimodal improvement options like moving commuters by bicycle or mass transit, implementing transportation demand management and utilizing other roadways to alleviate congestion on the road, especially during peak hours. “The …

Just doing the math here: the person interviewed commutes an hour and 15 minutes each way. Multiply by 250 days a year and 10 years, and the result is he has lost 8.6 months (three quarters of a year!) of his life during that time. We don't need a cure for old age---we need a cure for commuting!   more ›

Then and Now: Interstate 66

The second installment in the Then and Now series shows Interstate 66 when the area used for the highway was part of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad route.

Like many Arlington residents or workers, you probably make frequent use of Interstate 66 (I-66). But do you know when it was built, or that it used to be a wooded area popular among walkers and other nature lovers? Indeed, what we know now as I-66 was previously part of the former route of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad. In 1956, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT; known then as the Virginia Department of Highways) acquired two sections of this route and sought to provide a right-of-way through Arlington as part of the new highway. However, the Arlington Coalition on Transportation (ACT), a citizens group formed to oppose the construction of I-66 through Arlington, filed a federal lawsuit expressing their complaints…
