Try These Hanukkah Recipes During the Festival of Lights

Make these brisket, latke, and sufganiyot recipes for Hanukkah. Or, get them to-go from local spots in Clarendon Patch.

This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8 and ends on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 16. Observing the Festival of Lights goes hand-in-hand with making special Hanukkah foods. Before you light the menorah, make sure you have all the ingredients for some great brisket, latke, and sufganiyot. Although there are many recipes, below are a few to try during the eight nights. Hanukkah 2012 in Arlington

Celebrate the Festival of Lights in Arlington with fun events and delicious recipes.

This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8, and ends a week later on Sunday, Dec. 16. According to Chabad.org, Hanukkah starts on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev and lasts for eight days. For those of us who aren't attuned to the Jewish calendar, that translates to sundown on Saturday, Dec. 8.  Here are some ways to celebrate Hanukkah in Arlington: Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the story of the Maccabean Revolt against Syrian rulers in present day Israel 2,300 years ago. The Maccabees wanted to rededicate Jerusalem's main temple but had only enough oil to kindle the Eternal Light for one day. The oil lasted for eight days, according to the story, and the holiday of Hanukkah was born. …

Families to Celebrate 'Hanukkah on Ice' at Pentagon Row

Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington plans celebration for Sunday at the Pentagon City Row ice rink.

Children and adults from Arlington celebrating Hanukkah are set to converge on the outdoor ice rink at Pentagon City Row this weekend. From 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Hanukkah on Ice will begin with Jewish music and classic holiday songs. Arlington County Fire Chief James Schwartz will light a huge menorah at 7 p.m. "It is a holiday that enriches our lives with the light of tradition" said Rabbi Mordechai Newman, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington and coordinator of Hanukkah on Ice. "We want to make the spirit of the Hanukkah holiday alive for the kids." The Pentagon row ice rink is located at 1201 S. Joyce St. in Arlington. Tickets are $12 at the door and $10 in advance.
