The Mardi Gras parade on Wilson Boulevard is Tuesday evening.
The 15th Annual Clarendon-Courthouse Mardi Gras Parade comes back to the area Tuesday evening. The free parade evokes the spirit of New Orleans with nearly 50 floats from the Arlington community, including entries from Arlington County Fire and Rescue and the Arlington Food Assistance Center. Family-friendly event is in its 15th year.
The 15th annual Clarendon-Courthouse Mardi Gras Parade kicks off at 8 p.m. Tuesday -- Fat Tuesday -- along Wilson Boulevard. The event, which bills itself as "the Washington area's largest Mardi Gras celebration," is free. The parade route runs along Wilson from North Barton to North Irving Street. This year's parade features more than 40 groups from across the region, including the Batala Washington, the Jim Moyer Circus Club and the DC Rollergirls. The Clarendon Alliance, which organizes the event, has 25 cases of Mardi Gras beads on order, according to a news release. A day filled with fun, food and music
Volunteers, civic groups, businesses, political candidates, artists, activists: It seemed like everyone who has a stake in the future of Clarendon came out for the 14th annual Clarendon Day celebration -- and that includes the estimated 10,000 festival-goers who crowded the streets around the Clarendon Metro with their families, friends and neighbors. An estimated 10,000 people descended on the heart of Arlington on Saturday for the 14th annual Clarendon Day. About 25 general exhibitors plus about that many artists lined the streets selling everything from jewelry to apparel, old magazines to framed artwork. If you spent a few minutes around the Clarendon Metro, or on the blocked portions of Wilson or Clarendon boulevards, you may have overheard neighbors running into one another. In front of Hard Times Cafe, one woman chastised her boyfriend: "We should've gotten here two hours ago!" The mouth-watering smell of ribs, chili, pizza, Thai food and made-on-the-spot doughnuts, among many other items, wafted through the air. The first Saturday of fall was filled with music and food at the Clarendon Day festival.
Music, food and fun brought the neighborhood out to play for Clarendon Day 2011 -- and then some. Organizers estimated about 10,000 people came Saturday afternoon to the 14th annual celebration in the heart of Arlington. Live music, crafts, promotions from local businesses, food and carnival rides for the children surrounded the Clarendon Metro station. Brenda Walter's daughter Ella waited in line for the face painting at the Virginia Commerce Bank Kid's Zone -- a nonstop hub of excitement that featured everything from palm-tree rock walls to an obstacle course. The heart of Arlington will come alive Saturday for the 14th annual Clarendon Day – a street festival with music, food, arts and crafts plus family-friendly entertainment and morning runs for children and adults. “I think it’ll be a nice day,” said Matt Hussmann, executive director of the Clarendon Alliance. “The weather is supposed to be nice. It’s also fun just to come out and see all of your Clarendon neighbors. People bump into each other out on the street, and it’s nice just to sit down and chat, drink a beer and enjoy the music.” He added: “What’s not to like?
