Thanksgiving morning race expected to draw 3,000 runners.
Registration is now open for the seventh annual Turkey Trot 5K Race hosted by the Christ Church of Arlington. The fun run/walk is expected to draw 3,000 people and goes through the Lyon Park and Ashton Heights neighborhoods at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving day, according to the church’s website. Organizers say the race fills up soon, so potential runners are encouraged to register early. The race starts off at the corner of Pershing Drive and North Highland Street, the website states. It supports these local charities: the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless (AACH), Doorways for Women and Families, and the Arlington Food Assistance Center. Washington-Lee High School welcomed "Glee" star Lauren Potter on Friday afternoon. “It’s amazing. She is so nice, and it’s awesome to have her here,” said Brittany Mirro, a 17-year-old senior and president of Washington-Lee’s Best Buddies Chapter. Best Buddies International is a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Potter’s visit was a treat for the Washington-Lee Best Buddies group, which raised the most money in donations for the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C., event, which takes place Saturday. The Mason Mile Race & Superstar Family Fun Day was held this weekend.
The legacy of a little boy who died five years ago after battling brain cancer continues to inspire people to give their time and money to help encourage and empower families going through the same or similar struggle. About 300 runners participated in the Mason Mile Race & Superstar Family Fun Day this weekend. Up to 400 people attended, and preliminary estimates show that the group raised about $5,000 for the Children's National Medical Center, according to organizers. The Mason Leach Superstar Fund is designed to help patients "recognize their inner-strength and feel like a 'superstar,' " according to the charity's website.
