Corina Coronel, of Carlin Springs Elementary School, was named principal of the year in a ceremony last week.
Over the last 8 years, there has been an evident change in students who have graduated from Carlin Springs Elementary School. “The kids from Carlin Springs Elementary didn’t always succeed,” said Dan Redding, who is an assistant principal at Carlin Springs and was previously in the same role at Kenmore Middle School. That was before Corina Coronel took over as principal. “When she became principal, there was an immediate difference,” Redding said. “…They are doing so much better.” In a testament to that success, Coronel last week was named the Arlington County Public Schools system's Principal of the Year. Elementary school program starts next school year.
A $25,000 state grant will fund a bilingual program at Carlin Springs Elementary School designed to teach healthy eating habits to children and their families. The Healthy Meals for Healthy Families program includes weekly classes for at-risk students in the third, fourth and fifth grades at Carlin Springs. Carlin Springs Elementary, Kenmore Middle have been 'secured.'
Update (1:08 p.m.): Police K-9 units have cleared the area around the schools, though the suspect remains at large, accoridng to police. The school day at Carlin Springs and Kenmore has returned to normal, according to Arlington Public Schools. --- Original story: Arlington County police are searching for an armed man near two schools.
