Metro to Hand Out Free Farecards to Get Riders on Yellow Line

Metro trying to incentivize commuters to jump from the Blue Line to the Yellow Line at certain stations.

Rush Plus service isn’t relieving crowding on some lines like Metro planned, so the transit system is going to start handing out free farecards worth $5 to some passengers on Monday, according to WTOP. When Rush Plus started in June, Metro reduced the number of Blue Line trains while increasing trains on other lines, including the Yellow Line. The result has created more overcrowding on the Blue Line because riders aren't making a switch to the Yellow Line. Riders on the Orange Line through Arlington and Falls Church told Patch this summer that they were largely satisfied with the changes. However, the Washington Post reported in the first week of Rush Plus that Blue Line riders seemed to be frustrated with overcrowding.

Metro Board Splits Blue Line During Rush Hour

Trains will be rerouted to the Yellow Line to alleviate Orange Line crowds.

Metro's board approved the plan to change Blue, Yellow and Orange Line rush hour service during a meeting Thursday. The Huffington Post reports that the "Blue Line split" will make more room for packed Orange Line trains during rush hour. Blue Line trains from Franconia-Springfield will be rebranded for Yellow Line Service and sent into the District of Columbia via the Yellow Line's Potomac River bridge. The service change will alleviate crowds on the Orange Line during morning and evening rush hours, but will cause some waiting for customers using the Blue Line via Arlington Cemetery.  --- Residents who use Metro for their morning and evening commutes may want to pay attention to a customer service meeting Thursday, Oct. 12.
