Walmart, Other Retailers to Start Black Friday Sales on Thanksgiving Day

Target, Kmart included in turkey day sales. Is it too early to start Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving Day?

If you have a black belt in Black Friday shopping, listen up: Area big-box retailers are gearing up to dazzle bargain hunters even earlier this year—starting Thanksgiving Day, right after you put away the pumpkin pie. Walmart, Target and Kmart are planning all-out holiday shopping assaults. Why doze off in a turkey slump watching football when you can be out taking care of holiday shopping business? Walmart will offer, beginning at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, holiday gifts for the entire family, while supplies last. That includes an electric scooter for $79, a steam mop for $39 or men's jeans for $9.50 (Why do Mom and Dad always get the boring presents?). Target's deals begin an hour later, at 9 p.m. According to an ad leaked …

Away from Big Malls and Box Store Shopping Frenzies, Most Shoppers Saw a Tame Black Friday

For shoppers looking for less crowds on Black Friday, outdoor areas like Georgetown's M Street and Market Common Clarendon, or smaller malls such as The Ballston Common might be the way to go.

While the Pentagon City Mall and bigger box stores like Target and Walmart met with frenzied lines of shoppers when they opened their doors late Thursday night, smaller venues saw much quieter Black Fridays.  "I'll tell you one thing, I'm never going to Walmart again anywhere near Black Friday," said Ballston shopper Cindy Lopez. "We went there last night because we were looking for an Xbox for my brother, and it was insane. Usually I love camping out, it's exciting and it gives me a rush. But the line went from the registers at the front to the back of the store, and in the electronics department, I heard one lady threatening to punch another lady in the face."  Told from the calm, relatively quiet atmosphere of the Ballston Common Mall, …

Support Your Favorite Small Business With a Patch Shout-Out

With Small Business Saturday coming this weekend, you can help drive feet — and wallets — to your favorite independent business.

You might be the type who finds sleeping on a freezing sidewalk for the best Black Friday deals exciting. Or perhaps you've already started working out your mouse-clicking finger for Cyber Monday. But if neither scenario appeals to you, there is an alternative — Small Business Saturday. Clarendon Patch would love to hear which small businesses you can't live without in Arlington County. Tell us in the comments which independently owned business is a must for shoppers this Saturday and …

Holiday Guide 2011: Picking the Best E-Reader

Never before has being digital come with so many options.

This year, the chances are high that you'll either be shopping for an e-reader or hoping to find one under the tree with your name on it. Mashable, in its look to see which tablet has generated the most online buzz, calls e-readers "the Tickle Me Elmo for adults." Luckily, the Arlington County Library has put together a nice collection of tips to help sort out the differences between a Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire (and other ways to read without paper). But before you rush out to the Apple Store or Barnes & Noble, let us know...
