Ride through the winter? Yes you can. Just be careful about it.
Icy roads and snowy paths. They’re not here yet, but they’re coming. We almost had them this past weekend. While riding in Arlington’s winter conditions does require a bit of extra effort and care, it’s still quite doable. There are plenty of great resources for learning more about winter riding. A couple of years ago I wrote about dealing with extended darkness, the potential for slick surfaces, and extra debris on the streets. The Washington Area Bike Forum continues to be a great place for Arlington-specific cold weather clothing and equipment advice. There’s plenty of discussion of the question of when to use studded tires (ice) or big knobby tires (snow) for the neophyte at the forums. I’m done belaboring the plowing issue — well, …

The Arlington Fun Ride — by hard work and luck — managed to live up to its name this weekend.
This past weekend, the Arlington Fun Ride drew more than 150 people out to enjoy a beautiful Saturday morning riding the Arlington Loop. The ride — in its third year — is put on a by a group of volunteers to demonstrate that Arlington's trails are a great place for all Arlingtonians to have fun and get fit. The idea is that by providing a supportive and safe environment to see how to tie all of our the trails together, participants will discover just how easy it is to enjoy those trails. (Disclosure: I'm on the organizing committee.) The Arlington Loop is a 17-mile trail tying together of the Mount Vernon, Custis, Washington & Old Dominion, and Four Mile Run trails. Participants started behind Phoenix Bikes in Barcroft Park, and wound …

It’s been one year – and one million trips – for the biggest bike sharing system in the United States. Arlington County took the lead in bringing Capital Bikeshare to the region – so why haven’t we seen more of them in Arlington?
On Sept. 20, 2010, I and many other people rode the first wave of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) bikes from the Washington Navy Yard to their home docking stations around the region. While I was convinced the bikeshare program was a good idea that would improve local transportation, I – and most of us, I think – really had no idea that it would turn out to be so popular. They’re all over the district, carrying commuters from Mount Pleasant, tourists along the National Mall, and errand-runners all over the place. So where are they in Arlington? Well, they’re certainly in Crystal City. The initial CaBi launch placed more than 100 bikes in the Crystal City and Pentagon City neighborhoods. The population density of the area was ideal, and the …

North Arlington finally joins the nation's biggest bike sharing network. Rosslyn and Courthouse will have Capital Bikeshare stations by Wednesday.
Arlington’s Rosslyn and Courthouse neighborhoods will finally get to join the region’s Captial Bikeshare network this week. Rosslyn will be home to three new stations, and Courthouse will get one. The stations will be at: This will bring Arlington’s total to more than 125 CaBi bikes at 18 stations spread between Arlington’s Courthouse, Rosslyn, Crystal City and Pentagon City neighborhoods. In addition to being a quick and easy way between Arlington neighborhoods, the location of the Rosslyn stations will make bike sharing one of the easiest and quickest ways for residents to get to and from Georgetown. Since the system operates around the clock, it also presents another solution for Arlingtonians that miss the last Metro train home …
