Three candidates seeking a vacant seat on the county board participated in an Arlington County Civic Federation forum Tuesday night.
Major Arlington County projects like the Artisphere and proposed Columbia Pike trolley and the amount of money the local government gives to the school system provided ample fodder for a candidate forum Tuesday night. Democrat Libby Garvey – a school board member who, if elected, would again cement the one-party dominance over local government – found herself between Republican Mark Kelly and Green Party candidate Audrey Clement, both of whom want to cut or eliminate tax dollars going to things like the Artisphere and a new Black Box Theater. Kelly and Clement also both oppose a planned $250 million streetcar project along Columbia Pike. Kelly called it a “boondoggle” that will “wreak havoc” on existing businesses, and Clement believes …

Fundraisers aimed at building Democratic support for 2011, 2012 elections.
It's a busy week to be a Democrat in Arlington. Arlington County Board Member Jay Fisette and his partner, Bob Rosen, will host a reception for state Senate candidate Barbara Favola from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at their home on Jackson Street. The reception will feature U.S. Sen. Jim Webb. Suggested contributions range from $100 to $2,500. Also today: The Arlington County Civic Federation will hold the second part of its candidate forums, which will focus on local candidates. Incumbents Walter Tejada and Mary Hynes will face Green Party candidate Audrey Clement for two open seats on the county board. Stark differences emerge between the two women seeking to represent portions of Arlington and McLean in the state Senate.
Barbara Favola showed she still had plenty of fight in her Tuesday night despite a tough-as-nails primary battle that lasted into late August. The Arlington County Board member met McLean businesswoman Caren Merrick head-on in the Washington-Lee High School auditorium. The two were among a slate of area legislative candidates asked to participate in a forum hosted by the Arlington County Civic Federation, the unofficial kick-off to general election season. Both women came across as polished as they laid out their respective platforms in opening and closing statements.
