One homeless man built a significant structure near Rosslyn.
The Virginia Department of Transportation on Monday demolished a substantial structure near Rosslyn that was built by a homeless man, WJLA reported. The structure took several years for Francisco Fernandez Diaz to build, and was made of "tree limbs, branches, ropes and clothing," according to WJLA. Residents were divided on whether the structure was impressive or an eyesore. Last week, the Council of Governments released a report showing there are fewer homeless people in the region than in past years — a 2.4 percent decrease from 2012 and a 4 percent decrease from 2009. Arlington County's median income puts it on top 10 list nationwide; fourth in Virginia.
A new report from Forbes places Arlington County among America’s 10 richest counties in the United States. The list is based on the U. S. Census Bureau’s Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates from 2011, the most recent year for which information is available. See also: The wealthiest county in the United States is Virginia's own Loudoun County, with a median income of close to $120,000. As Arlington warms up, so does progress on cycling infrastructure.
Winter not only takes a lot of people off their bikes, it also put a lot of the improvements to cycling infrastructure on pause. Striping is harder to apply, new construction is harder to manage in the cold, and labor is often scarce. But spring brings back the work, and Arlington’s got a number of bike-related projects on tap. Last month, Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) finally expanded to Columbia Pike. This long-awaited expansion will help extend the range of Arlington’s existing CaBi network, providing something of a middle ground between its well-established locations in Crystal City and the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor. The highest-paid part-time county employee makes $95.13 per hour.
Arlington County's part-time employees make anywhere from $13.13 to $95.13 an hour. The county had 239 permanent part-time employees as of March 1, which includes school crossing guards and some library assistants, among a variety of other positions. The highest-paid part-time employee is a psychiatrist with the count's Department of Human Services; the lowest-paid are various technicians or workers at the Arlington County Trades Center — the staging area for industrial operations, including vehicle and equipment maintenance. Arlington County will be honoring a few good women on Thursday. The county's Commission on the Status of Women will honor its 2013 Women of Vision. They received the awards for their commitment and leadership in the community. The winners, and their biographies from the commission: The commission works as advocates for economic and social interests of Arlington women, according to the group’s website. The award ceremony is slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, 4301 Wilson Blvd. Tickets are not required, but a $25 donation is requested to support the work of the commission. Arlington County is seeking preliminary, informal ideas for the future of historic Reevesland farmhouse. The site, which was home to the county's last working dairy farm and is located in the Boulevard Manor community, has for years hung between a group of enthusiastic, concerned residents who want to save the property and the county government, which doesn't seem to know what to do with it. Arlington County issued a request for proposals for the property in the fall but no private developer responded. The current request for interest, or RFI, seeks ideas that would give the Reevesland farmhouse a new purpose. Arlington County will host its 44th annual tribute to the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday. The celebration of King's life will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Washington-Lee High School, 1301. N. Stafford St. A volunteer fair featuring area nonprofits will start things off at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature a keynote address from Lehigh University Director of Africana Studies James Braxton Peterson, a performance by Grammy-nominated progressive hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon, a dance tribute by Urban Artistry and an exhibit on Arlington during the Civil Rights Era. Updated 3 p.m. The National Weather Service has discontinued the winter weather advisory for Arlington and much of the DC region. However, we may still see under an inch of snowfall this evening, according to the weather service. Previous Story: The National Weather Service said Thursday morning that Arlington County and the region can expect 1 to 3 inches of snow today, down from the 5 inches or so predicted last night. I can remember being heartbroken some years ago to watch (NPS?) workers tossing a homeless person's possessions into a truck in Farragut Square. These folks have so little to tie them back to their earlier life that is a true shame not to have some alternatives available. As a community, we need to put forth more effort to support the homeless. more ›
