Arlington Runner: 3 Marathons in 1 Day for Boston

Local super runner Frank Fumich raises more than $44,000 for victims of the Boston Marathon blasts.

Starting at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, Arlington’s Frank Fumich started running—and in 24 hours, he completed the equivalent of three marathons (78.6 miles) to raise money for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. The ultra runner was already in shape to complete such a difficult event, The Huffington Post reported. Fumich runs a couple of marathons every month and has competed in the Virginia Triple Iron Triathlon, according to a 2011 Washington Post profile. Fumich’s running route on April 20—just five days after the Boston Marathon bombing— was a 6.55-mile lap along Northern Virginia's Mount Vernon Trail. He ran it 12 times. Ovechkin, Pontius, Wall to be Featured as Augmented Reality Statues

The Ballston Business Improvement District will unveil the statues next month at the annual Taste of Arlington.

Want to have your picture taken with Washington Capitals team captain Alex Ovechkin, Washington Wizards point guard John Wall or D.C. United midfielder Chris Pontius? The Ballston Business Improvement District, or BID, wants to make that a reality — an augmented reality, actually. The BID will unveil a series of augmented reality statues at this year's Taste of Arlington, which will be from noon to 5 p.m. on May 19. The "statues" are actually 15-second video loops of Ovechkin, Wall or Pontius in different poses that can be accessed by downloading the BID's app and targeting one of the augmented reality markers. The markers are similar to quick response or QR codes that smartphones and tablets are able to scan. So if you stand next to the …

A Runner's Challenge: 30 Races for Turning 30

A local runner has taken on the challenge of completing 30 races in one year.

Crossing the finish line in a race is an experience few things can match, some runners will tell you. That's been the case for Arlington resident Lauren Bailey, who started running seven years ago. But Bailey's first marathon didn't go exactly as planned. “At mile 15-and-a-half, I had heatstroke,” she told Patch. “So I had to stop running the marathon, and it was the single most disappointing thing that had ever happened to me… I knew I never wanted to feel that way again.” Bailey used that initial setback to fuel her determination and embarked on a personal challenge that was at the same time daunting and exhilarating — running 30 races in one year, the year of her 30th birthday. “For my 30th birthday, I knew I wanted to do something big…

Boston Explosions Could Affect Marine Corps Marathon Security

Explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday could affect security measures at Washington-area races.

The explosions that killed three and injured more than 100 people at the Boston Marathon on Monday could have security implications for the Marine Corps Marathon in October. The Marine Corps Marathon begins on the grounds of the Pentagon and the course moves through Arlington and Washington. In 2010, the event had heightened security in light of a shooting at Marine Corps-related facilities earlier that year. At the time, Col. Daniel J. Choike said Marines were working with local law enforcement agencies and the FBI to ensure that "additional measures" were taken in what was already a "robust security plan." Yonathan Melaku was later charged with a shooting at the Pentagon, a Marine Corps recruiting sub-station in Chantilly, a Coast Guard …
