Arlington’s Bike Month Events

May is nationally celebrated as Bike Month, and Arlington’s in on the action. From events encouraging commuting by bike to lazy recreational rides through the city, there’s something for everyone.

The first major Bike Month event in Arlington was Bike to School Day, which took place on Wednesday this year. Across Arlington County, some kids did what they do every day — they rode to school. Others joined with their peers to form bike trains to school. Arlington’s generally compact school districts and multiuse paths make getting to school by bike a smart option for lots of students. This Sunday, Bike DC will provide a chance for a car-free ride through both Washington and Arlington. Several thousand cyclists will roll along a closed circuit that starts near the National Mall, heads up Rock Creek Parkway, comes back down and across the Roosevelt Bridge, heads up the George Washington Parkway, and drops back down to the Air Force …

JV Generals Finish Season with Win Over Hayfield

Generals finish season 12-8.

The Washington-Lee JV Generals scored two runs on a Will Burgess clutch double in the home half of the fifth inning and held on for a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Hayfield Hawks Tuesday night at Quincy Park's Norwood Field. Burgess scattered six hits and three walks over six innings of work, yielding two runs (one earned) and striking out four. As if that wasn't enough, he was on base all three times and scored the Generals' first run. In the top of the third inning with runners on first and second and one out, Daniel Bowler made the defensive play of the game. Hayfield successfully executed the double steal of second and third. Bowler blocked catcher Jeff Kruger's throw attempting to catch the Hayfield runner stealing third, …

JV Generals Crush Raiders in Penultimate Game

JV Generals' final game is tonight at Quincy Park.

Will Burgess doubled home two runs and Jeff Kruger immediately doubled home two more as the Washington-Lee JV Generals exploded with six second-inning runs Friday night at Norwood Field at Quincy Park. The team went on to defeat the Stuart Raiders 12-2. The Generals added three more runs in the third inning. Andrew Lewis pitched shutout innings in the fourth and fifth, which was followed by a shutout sixth by T.R. Sheehy. The defensive play of the night belonged to Henry Bendon, who speared a sizzling Stuart shot at third base and calmly gunned down the Raider runner. The JV Generals' final game is at home on Tuesday against the Hayfield Hawks.

Yorktown Girls Tennis Wins National District Team Championship

Patriots finish season 14-0.

The Yorktown Girls Varsity Tennis Squad wrapped up an undefeated season in the National District this week, beating Mount Vernon 8-1 on Monday. Last week, the girls beat Edison (9-0), Falls Church (8-1), Washington-Lee (6-3) and Hayfield (9-0). The team's final record for the season is 14-0. Yorktown has placed first in the National District tennis team championship six out of the past seven years. The team now goes on to compete in the Northern Regional Team Championship and in the individual singles and doubles championships. The team had a huge turnover in its starting lineup, losing four of its six regular starters last year — including former state champion Emily Flickinger, who now plays for Auburn University. Four of the Yorktown …

JV Generals Narrowly Lose to Yorktown Before Final Two Games

Patriots bested Generals 6-5 on Wednesday.

The JV Yorktown Patriots scored runs in each of the first three innings, built a 5-0 lead, and then hung on for a razor close 6-5 win over the Washington-Lee Generals at Greenbriar Park on Wednesday night. Collin Stuart's first inning solo home run was followed by Matt Rosenberg's two-run shot in the third. Washington-Lee clawed back in the fourth inning when Jeff Kruger doubled home Will Burgess and James Mellin knocked in Kruger for a 5-2 score. In the sixth inning, Paul Landini, Daniel Bowler and T.R. Sheehy all singled to load the bases and scored on Ben Buchholz's walk and Cameron Anderson's grounder into right field for a 5-5 tie. Yorktown's Parker Denny ignited the decisive seventh inning Patriot rally with a leadoff single, and …

Rolling Past Borders

Few DC-area cyclists stay within their own political borders – and neither can each jurisdiction's efforts to improve cycling.

Arlington is, like its neighbors, a relatively small jurisdiction with a population that constantly crosses borders. Some efforts to improve area cycling can take place wholly within a jurisdiction’s borders, such as getting the Columbia Pike Bike Boulevards in place. However, many of the most significant efforts benefit greatly from cross-jurisdictional cooperation between area counties, cities and the district. Arlington, by my experience, has expanded its cooperation with its neighbors over the years. The first Arlington Bike Map I ever saw (in the late 1990s) treated the other side of the Potomac as little more than an outline, with Fairfax County getting the same treatment. Now the map not only recognizes these places, but it shows …

RG3 Era Begins With Confusing Quarterback Pick

The Redskins used a valued selection on a luxury item and inadvertently opened the door to a potentially awkward training camp.

Addressing the receiving corps in free agency and drafting multiple guards count as positive steps in the new Robert Griffin III (RG3) era. Passing on a needed tackle, running back or safety in the fourth round for another quarterback – Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins - in RG3’s first season does not. From the moment the Washington Redskins shipped three first-round picks plus a second-round selection to the St. Louis Rams last month, the plan should have been — and in the eyes of the staff, presumably is — to maximize their new asset’s potential. I am stumped how adding another passer does that. As always, team comes first and smart organizations draft talent over need, but within reason. In this case, special consideration should have gone…

This was one of the dumbest picks. Not that Cousins is not good, I'd bet he can become a decent NFL QB. And while that is what the Skins might have been thinking, here is the problem: To develop a young QB into a quality NFL QB (starter or backup), they require endless repetitions with the first team and then game time. What are the things the backup or third string guy will not get after …   more ›

Randy Johnson Cheers Washington-Lee JV Baseball to Victory

Five-time Cy Young Award-winner joined the Generals in the dugout Friday for their win against the Mount Vernon Majors.

Will Burgess pitched five-plus strong innings and scored the go-ahead run on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Ben Buckholtz as the Washington-Lee Generals defeated the Mount Vernon Majors 4-2 in a junior varsity baseball clash Friday at Quincy Park. Burgess recorded eight strikeouts, had two of W-L's six hits and scored two runs. Burgess tired in the sixth inning and the Majors loaded the bases with no outs. Cam Anderson relieved him and retired Mount Vernon thanks in part to a spectacular leaping catch by Buckholtz at first base. Anderson then struck out the side in the final Mount Vernon at bat. The biggest buzz of the night, however, was caused by former major league and future Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson. The 6-foot-10-inch …

SPEAK OUT: Did the 'Skins Give up Too Much to Move Up?

Tell Us: Should the 'Skins draft a franchise quarterback or fill another need?

The NFL Draft has finally arrived and the Washington Redskins are sitting in the No. 2 spot in the first round. ESPN projects the 'Skins will select Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin, III. If RG3 comes to Washington, it will be the first time the Redskins have drafted a quarterback in the first round since Jason Campbell in 2005. Griffin threw for more than 4,000 yards and rushed for almost 700-yards last season while reaching the end zone 47 times. The last time the Redskins drafted a Heisman Trophy winner was 20-years ago when Desmond Howard joined the team, according to the Washington Times. But to move up in the 2012 NFL Draft, the 'Skins gave up a king’s ransom. To move into the St. Louis Rams’ spot, the Washington Times reported …
