Democratic gubernatorial candidate laid out platform at George Mason's Arlington campus.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe said Thursday he would push to reform the state's Standards of Learning, or SOL, tests if he is elected in November. "The current, once-a-year, high-stakes, multiple-choice testing isn't working for students, parents or teachers," he told a crowd of more than 300 people at George Mason University's Arlington campus, to rousing applause. Under the current system, a fifth-grade teacher who raises a child from a first-grade reading level to a fourth-grade reading level is considered a failure, he said. Teachers who want to break up the test into smaller portions, or test at different levels based on student achievement should be encouraged, he said. McAuliffe also said he would establish a "…

H-B Woodlawn will celebrate the event on May 17 to coincide with the annual Bike to Work Day, schools spokesman Frank Bellavia told Patch. Arlington County, schools together built $1 million field.
The Washington-Lee Generals softball team broke in its new $1 million field Monday night with a 16-1 win over the JEB Stuart High School Raiders. The field, at the corner of Washington Boulevard and North Quincy, next to the Washington-Lee football field, opened Monday. It was built by Arlington County and Arlington Public Schools, and will be a joint-use facility — that is, residents can go through the county to reserve it for use when the Generals aren't playing, schools spokesman Frank Bellavia told Patch. "…The field was great," Washington-Lee softball Coach Will Downs said in an email. Construction began in the fall, though wet weather caused some delays. The team had been playing on an older field that didn't have an outfield fence …

Virginia is again among the states with the most participation in National Bike to School Day: More than 80 schools or groups across the state are planning organized bike rides. Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening somewhere in the area. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Drivers at the Lake Ridge commuter lot near Interstate 95 saw more than the road crews and heavy machinery that have become standard commute scenery. Prince William County Police arrested a man April 19 when they found him dancing naked on the hood of his car. Without question, you should surrender to authorities when police have identified you as the suspect in a grand-larceny case. But we feel compelled to caution suspects about checking their pockets after a 27-year-old Annandale man turned himself in. Police in Falls Church say they …

A revised policy would allow gay members but continue to prohibit adult LGBTQ leaders. Should Boy Scouts of America lift its ban for youth? Has the policy affected your family's experience with scouting? Tell us in the comments.
For years, the Boy Scouts of America has struggled with whether to lift its ban on gay scouts and leaders. But it may be an issue the organization will soon put, at least partially, to rest. In response to the flood of feedback the group has recieved since last summer, when it voted to uphold policy banning gay members and LGBTQ leaders, the Boy Scouts of America announced Friday it was proposing an end to the ban for youth scouts. The organization would still ban adults "who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA," according to the draft policy. The issue will come before 1,400 voting BSA members at a June meeting in Texas. The National Capital Area Council, …

Band, orchestra and chorus students traveled overnight to compete in music festival.
About 70 Wakefield High School students are safe at a hotel in the suburbs of Boston, where they will stay in light of the ongoing manhunt for a suspect in this week's tragic bombing. "They are safe. I've been in communication multiple times today with the band directors," Wakefield Principal Chris Willmore told Patch. "They are not heading into downtown Boston or anywhere near what's happening." The group, along with parent chaperones and school staff, traveled overnight to compete in a music festival. Wakefield High School Band Director Denny D'Alelio, Orchestra Director Gene Pohl and Choral Director Nadim Nader are with them. They are staying at a hotel in Danvers, Mass., which is northeast of Boston and about 30 to 40 minutes away from…
