Spokesman: Man sat outside restaurant on North Fillmore Street watching children over weekend.
The Arlington County Police Department is looking for a man accused of inappropriately touching himself while watching children over the weekend in downtown Clarendon. At about 1:15 p.m. Saturday, employees at a restaurant in the 1000 block of North Fillmore Street told police they saw a man sitting on a sidewalk between two parked cars with a newspaper over his lap, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. The employees said they saw him inappropriately touching himself while watching several young children in the restaurant's patio area, Sternbeck said. The employees told police they asked him to leave, and he reportedly did so without incident. Sternbeck would not name the restaurant where this was reported. Investigators are looking for…

Sure, it's the official harbinger of summer! But for one feisty Jack Russell Terrorist, this holiday weekend in particular poses a serious challenge.
Yep, everyone looks forward to Memorial Day weekend, including me. It kicks off all the summer fun, pays homage to our service men and women, offers up countless cookouts and parties, and brings tens of thousands of visitors to the D.C. area to celebrate. Including "Rolling Thunder." Rolling Thunder is not a troublesome weather system. It is not "Hell's Angels." It is a nonprofit organization with nearly 900,000 motorcycle riders who participate in the annual Memorial Day weekend rides nationwide to bring awareness to and action on behalf of the 10,000 reported POWs/MIAs of the Vietnam War. The riders are veterans and non-veterans, male and female, young and old. I can always tell when the Memorial Day holiday is approaching because the …
Help narrow the list to determine who has the best brews.
It's the last call in determining the finalists for our best beer selection in Clarendon contest. The category proved popular early on, so we divided this Readers' Choice category up into three parts. This week's contenders... ...are downtown staples. Treat yourself to an evening remembering why you love each of them and then tell us who has the best beer selection. In early June, we'll take this week's winner and put them up against the winners of Round 1 (Mad Rose Tavern) and Round 2 (Lyon Hall) to determine, finally, who is tops with the hops. And maybe we'll even put together a little something for the ultimate winner to hang on their wall — in case the question ever arises again. Voting in the poll below is open until 9 a.m. Friday. …

Best weather day this week: Friday
Weather forecasters are calling for increased mugginess and a chance of rain through Memorial Day in Northern Virginia. After enjoying a rain-free weekend, the area starts out with a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms on Monday, according to the National Weather Service. The Capital Weather Gang's Brian Jackson notes the chances for precipitation this week are partly due to Tropical Storm Alberto, hanging off the coast of South Carolina. Alberto is the first tropical storm of the 2012 season prior to the official start of the hurricane season June 1. "So far his center is forecast to stay well away from us, but that doesn’t mean he won’t affect our weather," Jackson wrote Sunday in The Washington Post. Chances for thunderstorms hang around…

Nathan Lyon jetted in from the West Coast to visit a vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Middletown, Conn., for the final taping of the upcoming Veria Living show 'Good Food America.'
MIDDLETOWN, CONN. — A vegetarian lunch date among friends turned into more than soup and salad last week when Sarah-Jane Ripa and Jessica Carso had a brush with fame and agreed to be interviewed by a celebrity chef for a national television show. The duo stopped by Middletown's It’s Only Natural Restaurant after noon Tuesday and found themselves in the middle of the taping of a segment for Chef Nathan Lyon’s Good Food America for the Veria Living network. “Everything about yesterday was unexpected,” Carso said Wednesday. “We went for lunch and when approached by the crew, I think we initially thought we'd be in some panned shots. I had no idea we'd end up being interviewed.” "We're going across the country on a healthy eats food trip and …

The Crimson on Glebe will replace existing Goodyear building.
The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved plans to develop a six-story apartment building across the street from Ballston Common Mall. The Crimson on Glebe will replace the existing Goodyear building and an adjacent single-family home at the corner of North Glebe and North Carlin Springs roads. The building, at 650 N. Glebe Road, will be within walking distance to the Ballston Metro Station. The 139,000-square-foot structure will include 163 apartments and 2,200 square feet of ground-level retail space. Like most major projects in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, the county was able to leverage significant contributions from the developer for its Affordable Housing Investment Fund ($480,000), public art ($75,000) and …

Project includes burying utility lines between South Wakefield and Four MIle Run Drive.
The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved a $5.7 million contract to bury utility lines and construct street improvements along a portion of Columbia Pike. The improvements are part of the second phase of the county's Columbia Pike Initiative, according to a news release. The affected portion of the Pike is between South Wakefield Street and Four Mile Run Drive. Once utility lines are underground, Alexandria-based Sagres Construction Corp. will begin building wider sidewalks, new lighting and bus shelters, and planting trees along the street. Work is slated to begin in July and last through fall 2013. “These street improvements bring us one step closer to realizing Arlington’s vision for an accessible, diverse and vibrant…
County has worked with community groups on project for five years.
The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved spending up to $1.7 million for extensive upgrades to a Lyon Village dog park. Renovation to James Hunter Park, on the corner of North Herndon and 13th streets, should begin this summer. Plans call for a 1,200-square-foot plaza, a solar-powered water feature and irrigation system and a "pet comfort station." "Just steps from the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, this park is going to be a small gem — offering great facilities built using sustainable materials and practices,” Chairwoman Mary Hynes said in a statement. Construction should be complete by late next spring. County staff have worked with various community groups on the project for about five years, according to a news release…

Friday was Bike to Work Day.
The Ballston Business Improvement District was out bright and early Friday to celebrate a new Capital Bikeshare station and promote Bike to Work Day. Crews filmed a Washington Nationals commercial in Georgetown and Arlington on Thursday.
Actors, camera crews and a film trailer took over Rose Park in Georgetown for part of Thursday morning and then moved to the Aurora Highlands and Arlington Ridge neighborhoods for the afternoon. The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) was filming scenes for a new Washington Nationals promo. MASN is a regional sports network owned by the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles that carries both Nats and Orioles games live. In the morning, a group of young boys in red, white and blue attire and Nats baseball hats were playing a game of pick-up baseball with their "dads" while the "moms" cheered them on. If not for the film crews with their cameras running alongside the players, it might have been a typical afternoon at Rose Park. Eric …
