The Arlington County Fire Department employs 319 people in various roles, such as fire response, education, and medical and environmental emergencies. The department was the first in the nation to hire a professional female fire fighter in 1974. It was also some of the first responders to the 2001 terrorist attack at the Pentagon. The department oversees ten fire stations in Arlington County.
