New Year’s Eve Celebrations: Toast, Dance, Run, Hike, Golf and More

New Year's Eve at the Drafthouse: Party like it's 1989. Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, at 2903 Columbia Pike, is ringing in 2014 with an '80s-themed celebration. Watch the Times Square ball drop on the cinema screen while a DJ provides music from the 1980s. Last year's event sold out, so buying tickets early is recommended. Tickets are $15. More info here.

First Night Fredericksburg: Tuesday, Dec. 31, 6 p.m. - 12:15 a.m., Downtown Fredericksburg. Globe drop and midnight countdown begin at 11:40 p.m. at Sophia and George streets. Admission buttons are required for everyone three years and older to attend the indoor and tent area performances and ride the trolley. $5 in advance, $8 at the event. Children 3 and under are free.

Ringing In Hope: A New Year's Eve Celebration: Tuesday, Dec. 31, noon, at Brambleton Town Center. The 1K walk kicks off at noon, followed by the 5K at 1 p.m. and 10K at 1:15 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres will be served to race participants at finish line along with post-race massages. Free family fun activities include pony rides, a barrel train ride, face painting, tattoos, music, moon bounces and more. Registration: 1K, $12; 5K, $30; 10K, $35. Brambleton Town Center, 42395 Ryan Rd, Brambleton.

'First Day Hikes' New Year's Day at Virginia State Parks

Fairfax Four-Miler: Start off your New Year's Eve with this festive four-mile run, hosted by Pacer's running store in Old Town Fairfax. Pizza and beverages will be served to all participants. $40, includes a race sweatshirt. Race kicks off at 6 p.m. Pacers, 10427 North St., Fairfax City.

New Year's Eve Golf Tournament: Annual four-person scramble. Entry fee includes green fee, cart fee, range balls, prizes and lunch. $70. Begins at 10 a.m. Herndon Centennial Golf Course, 909 Ferndale Ave.

ArtSpace Herndon's New Year's Eve Celebration. 7 p.m.: Family-friendly art activities and music. 8 p.m.: Music by The Music Loft's "Jumbo Shrimp" youth band. 9 p.m.: Bonfire and drum circle. 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.: Jazz music by Al Robertson Quartet featuring Frank Lombardi, light refreshments, and a champagne toast at midnight. All ages. Free and open to the public. ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center St. 703-956-6590.

First Night Alexandria Festival. A family-friendly festival in Old Town Alexandria. Shops and restaurants transform into performance venues to showcase local talent. Fun includes live music, dancing, art, and a fireworks show on the river. Noon to midnight. King and Royal streets. All ages welcome. Tickets are $20, kids 12 and under and active military are free.  

First Night Vienna. A family-friendly street festival featuring live music, artisan booths, food, family-friendly activities and more. Ring in the new year early at 9 p.m., or stay for the final countdown at midnight. 7 p.m. to midnight. Free admission. Along Historic Church Street.

80s New Year's Eve Dance Party. Dance the year away with The Legwarmers, a popular area 80s band. 9:30 p.m. $50. State Theatre, 220 N. Washington St., Falls Church.
