Spotlight: Homeward Trails Animal Rescue

This animal rescue program saves pets throughout the DelMarVa region.

Every day this week, Patch is profiling a local nonprofit agency. If there's a nonprofit that you think your neighbors need to know about, email Doug Tallman or Lauren Sausser.

Mission: "Homeward Trails seeks to find permanent adoptive homes in the Mid-Atlantic Region for dogs and cats from high-kill shelters or whose owners can no longer care for them. In so doing, we seek to reduce the rate of euthanasia of adoptable animals through the rescue and placement of homeless animals; to support proactive spay/neuter practices; to promote positive and ongoing behavioral training; and to educate the public about how to care for their animals in a humane way." The full mission statement is available online.

Financials: The annual operating budget is approximately $500,000.

History: Homeward Trails was founded 10 years ago by Sue Bell. During a vacation to Fayette County, W.Va., Bell discovered an animal shelter that had virtually no space to house its animals and was forced to euthanize almost all of them. Bell found herself frequently making the 6-hour return trip to West Virginia to help get those animals into loving homes and she eventually ended up founding Homeward Trails. The organization has helped rescue 9,500 animals since then.
