Capital Caring

Hospice provides end-of-life care across region.

Each week, Patch is profiling a local nonprofit agency. If there's a nonprofit that you think your neighbors need to know about, email Doug Tallman.

Mission: For 34 years, Capital Caring has helped 75,000 families cope with advanced illness by providing pain relief and symptom management, as well as emotional and spiritual support to families. Anyone medically eligible can access our care, regardless of their ability to pay.

The organization, which is open 24 hours a day, has 20 staff doctors who can provide pain relief and symptom management. Volunteers provide emotional and spiritual support.

History: "Our founder, Dr. Josefina Magno, believed that when curing disease was no longer possible, treatment should shift from '…curing to caring.' It is in this spirit, and in our desire to best fulfill our mission crafted in 1977, that we have adopted a name that represents how integral caring is in what we deliver each day for our patients and their families," according to Capital's website.

How can you help: "Just how important are donations to those we serve? Charitable gifts to Capital Caring help underwrite nearly 16 percent of patient care costs. We count on generous, compassionate people like you to make our services available to anyone who is medically eligible, regardless of their ability to pay," according to Capital's website.
