Five Things to Know About Dominion Power

McLean resident sits on board of directors, lacked power for six days.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, 66 households remained without power in Arlington County. All traffic signals were working, though 10 roads remained blocked.

The county continued to steer those without electricity to libraries, community centers, malls and indoor swimming pools, all of which have been deemed "cooling centers."

Dominion Virginia Power and county crews worked through the holiday on efforts to restore electricity across the county.

"No special treatment," Barr said in a note to McLean Patch. Barr, who joined the Dominion board in 2009, lives in the vicinity of Towlston Road, an area hard hit by Friday night's high winds.

Barr was the U.S. attorney general from 1991 to 1993 under President George H.W. Bush.

2. Dominion, headquartered in Richmond, is one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy, with a portfolio of approximately 28,000 megawatts of electric generation, 11,000 miles of natural gas transmission, gathering and storage pipeline, and 63,100 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines, according to the company's 2011 annual report.

Dominion operates the largest natural gas storage system in the United States, according to the report.

3. The formal name of the company is Dominion Resources, which is divided into three operating units. One of those is Dominion Virginia Power, which contributes 25 percent of the company's operating earnings, according to the 2011 annual report.

Dominion Virginia Power operates regulated electric transmission and distribution franchises in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, providing electric service to about 2.4 million customer accounts across the two states, according to the annual report.

4. Thomas F. Farrell II heads the company. He has been chairman, president and chief executive officer of Dominion since April 2007. He is also a member of the board of directors.

Farrell served in various executive positions before taking the company's reins. He is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Virginia Electric and Power Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dominion, and was chairman, president and chief executive officer of CNG, a former wholly-owned subsidiary of Dominion, according to that company.

5. Farrell's 2011 compensation: $13.9 million, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

Farrell is the energy industry finance chairman for the Mitt Romney campaign, the New York Times reported in February.
