Virginia Crew: Washington-Lee Wins Women's 1st Eight Petite Final

The Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships were Saturday on the Occoquan River.

The women's crew from Washington-Lee took defeated five other teams in the Women's 1st Eight Petite final. 

The team's time was 5:33.70, besting Lake Braddock by more than a second. 

The men's team placed third in the Mens 1st Eight Final later in the afternoon and fifth in the Mens 2nd Eight Final.

Since 1979, VASRA has sponsored championships for boats from across Virginia and the District. Today, it's the largest Virginia rowing event of the year.

Forty-nine schools from Virginia and Washington, DC competed in the 2013 event, rowing in more than 60 races throughout the course of the day.

"We had some excellent races today and there were some very close races," VASRA President John White told Patch as he stood watching the finals on the Occoquan.
