UPDATE: Whipple Contributors Heavily Favor Favola

Retiring senator's financial supporters following her lead in picking potential successor.

Campaign contributors who gave money to retiring state Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple overwhelmingly favor Arlington County Board Member Barbara Favola over Jamie Areizaga-Soto as a successor, according to analysis released Friday night by the Virginia Public Access Project, or VPAP.

Favola and Areizaga-Soto are in a bitter primary battle that will be resolved Tuesday. The winner will face Republican Caren Merrick in November.

VPAP determined that 65 of Whipple's donors have contributed a total of $51,585 to Favola's campaign. Only four people who contributed to Whipple also donated to Areizaga-Soto -- giving a total of $950.

The disparity is hardly surprising, considering Whipple herself endorsed Favola and has given her nearly $50,000.

In all, Areizaga-Soto has raised about $344,000 -- and of that, $230,000 is the candidate's own money. Favola has raised about $277,000 total.

Favola had about $35,000 cash on hand as of Aug. 10, according to the latest data available. Areizaga-Soto had about $47,000 left entering the final stretch of campaigning.

Spending in this race is more than double that of the average state Senate primary, according to VPAP analysis.

Update (5:30 p.m.): Whipple gave another $5,000 to Favola in the last 24 hours, according to information just published on VPAP. That's affects Favola's various totals listed above.
