Political Notebook: Virginia is for (Some) Lovers

Bits and bites from the world of Virginia and national politics.

Anti-discimination bill fails: Virginia's elected officials are unwilling to put into writing that the state in its hiring process should not discriminate against anyone based on that person's sexual orientation, according to the Virginian-Pilot. Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, sponsored the bill, which was killed in a committee vote Monday. Ebbin is openly gay.

An "unlimited supply" of oil?: U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told a crowd of college students, staff and faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University last week that there is an "unlimited supply of oil" in some parts of the world, according to the Capital News Service. When challenged by a student in the town hall discussion, LaHood repeated himself: "How else do you want me to say it? … We’re not going to run out of gas, we’re not going to run out of oil for a long, long, long time. Many countries have an unlimited supply.”

McDonnell's taxpayer-funded trips: Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell reported nearly $99,000 in gifts and travel last year, including more than $43,000 in taxpayer-funded trips, according to multiple news outlets. Those trips include trade missions to Asia, Israel and the Paris Air Show, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
