Garvey Sworn In, Officially Takes Seat on Arlington Board

Garvey's term lasts through Dec. 31.

Democrat Libby Garvey was sworn in to office Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours to fill the vacant seat on the Arlington County Board.

Garvey will serve out the remaining term left when former board member Barbara Favola ascended to the state Senate. Garvey's term lasts through Dec. 31. She must win a primary and general election later this year to hold the spot beyond that.

Clerk of Court Paul Ferguson administered the oath of office to Garvey shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. About 100 people attended.

"I feel very blessed to continue to serve as an elected official in this community," Garvey said. "And I'm honored to have so many other elected officials here with me. We're a very lucky group."

Garvey praised county and school system staff, citing the mission statement of Marriott International, which includes a commitment to treating employees in a way that leads to "extraordinary customer service and shareholder value."

"I love the simplicity of this message," Garvey said, "because it clearly says it's all about the people who do the work. Our employees are where the rubber meets the road."

Garvey resigned from the Arlington School Board at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Election officials certified her win Wednesday afternoon.
