County Board OKs Updating Rosslyn Long-Range Plan

Final version should come before board in 2012

The Arlington County Board voted 4-1 on Tuesday to refine a long-range plan for Rosslyn.

The plan focuses on improving transportation options, recommending a building height strategy and developing a better parks and open space network.

County officials say the plan will be subject to broad public participation before the final version goes before the board next year.

Board members debated how much time and resources the county should put into revamping the Rosslyn plan before giving their blessing. Whether the county should tweak height restrictions was a major discussion topic.

"I've been though enough Rosslyn planning exercises to know how the script ends," Chairman Chris Zimmerman said.

"… Rosslyn is very important. Yes. But it has a plan in place that has been done and redone."

Zimmerman said an update to the current plan in Rosslyn was "appropriate," but cautioned county staff not to go beyond their original scope.

While Rosslyn has some guidance in place, other areas of Arlington don't – and will suffer if all of the county's resources are focused on a single community, he said.

Board Member Walter Tejada cast the dissenting vote, saying he was afraid the county was "cutting corners."
