Police: Three in Custody Following Pair of Assaults on Custis Trail

Attacks reported within minutes of each other Thursday.

Two attacks were reported within minutes of each other on the Custis Trail on Thursday, according to the Arlington County Police Department.

Both occurred near the 1400 block of North Glebe Road, near Interstate 66. Police have three men in custody, though they have not been charged with anything as of Friday afternoon, spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

At 12:45 p.m. Thursday, the three men allegedly attacked a jogger on the Custis Trail.

They allegedly grabbed him as he was running and pistol-whipped him about his head, Sternbeck said. They ran away with his GPS watch and sunglasses. The man then ran home to call police.

Ten minutes after the initial attack, another runner passed three men police believe to be the same subjects. This time, they were spread out along the trail, Sternbeck said.

The runner passed two of the men and looked over his shoulder to see one of them pointing a handgun at him and heard a verbal threat. This runner was able to get away and report the attack, according to police.

The trio of suspects were taken into custody at 1:14 p.m. Thursday.

Police often remind people who use Arlington's trails to be aware of their surroundings and travel in pairs, and to not use both earbuds if listening to music.
