Police: DJ Accused of Sex Crimes Linked to Clarendon Assault

Arlington victim saw recent reports of man's arrest on Fairfax County charges and came forward, according to spokesman.

A 34-year-old man accused of multiple sex crimes in Fairfax County has been linked to a 2010 attack in Clarendon, the Arlington County Police Department announced Tuesday.

Joseph Rivera, who previously lived in the Arlandria neighborhood of Alexandria, was arrested in Las Vegas earlier this month on a series of Fairfax County charges and is awaiting extradition.

Rivera faces charges of rape, aggravated sexual battery, animate object sexual penetration and two counts of unlawful filming in Fairfax County. He is accused of filming and photographing himself sexually assaulting several unconscious women over the course of the last few years.

Fairfax police announced the arrest last week, saying there may be more victims.

One woman saw the news coverage of Rivera's arrest and contacted authorities about an incident that allegedly occurred between 2 and 2:33 a.m. on Dec. 26, 2010. In that case, a man sexually assaulted and photographed a woman while she was unconscious, according to the Arlington County Police Department.

Arlington police will charge Rivera with aggravated sexual battery once he is back in Virginia, spokesman Dustin Sternbeck told Patch.

Rivera worked as a private disc jockey at parties across the greater Washington area and organized bartending competitions. The Washington Post, citing Rivera's Facebook page, said he also worked as a DJ at restaurants in Bethesda, Washington and Northern Virginia — including A-Town Bar and Grill in Arlington.

He used the professional name "Joey Flash," according to the Post.

Investigators believe Rivera lived at 724 Four Mile Road in Alexandria until June of this year. Before that, he lived in Lorton, where some of the videos were shot, according to the Washington Post.

Las Vegas police arrested Rivera last week on the Fairfax County charges. Once he returns to Virginia, those charges will be looked at first, Fairfax County Master Police Officer Eddy Azcarate told Patch.

Fairfax County detectives have identified some of the victims; others are unknown to police, according to a news release. Incidents may go back several years, it states.

Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Adult Sex Crimes Unit are available to speak with potential victims at 703-246-7830.
