Wednesday Morning's Power Outage

A quick survey during the brief power outages in Rosslyn found a random smattering of buildings without power.

Dominion Power says that this morning's underground transformer outage in Rosslyn caused about 1,000 customers to go without power for a brief period this morning. As of 11am, Dominion reported that all but 123 customers had their power restored.

At the Oakwood Arlington apartment buliding, staff were greeting tenants at the door with flashlights and informing them of the power outage. Dominion workers could be seen working down a manhole immediately outside the building.

"We suspect that the cause of the outage is an underground piece of equipment that failed. Whether it's storm related or not, we don't know yet. We have to take the transformer out and get it tested," said Le-Ha Anderson of Dominion Power. She explained that their first move was to reroute power and restore service to as many customers as possible.

Most of the Rosslyn buildings still affected are a mix of condo buildings and office towers on the 1500 block of Clarendon and Wilson Boulevards, near the site of the malfunctioning transformer. Dominion says all power should be restored in Rosslyn by midnight tonight.

Across Northern Virginia, Wednesday's storms brought power outages to 24,000 Dominion customers, though all but 1900 had been restored as of 1pm.
