Passerby Finds Man with Severe Head Injury in Bluemont

Police aren't sure what caused the injury, spokesman says.

A 38-year-old Arlington man with significant head trauma was found lying in the street in the Bluemont community early Easter Sunday, according to information police released today.

The trauma was so severe the man had to be transported an area hospital to undergo immediate surgery to stop the bleeding in his brain, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

Sternbeck would not say how the man fared in surgery.

At about 1 a.m. Sunday, a passerby noticed the man lying in the street near the intersection of Wilson Boulevard and North Greenbrier Street.

That person went into a nearby restaurant and reported seeing a man down. Someone called the police.

The man appeared to have all of his belongings on him — including his wallet and cash, Sternbeck said.

"Robbery doesn't look to be any type of motive at this point, because those items were still in his possession," Sternbeck said.

The extent of the man's injuries were confined to his head, Sternbeck said.

Investigators are not sure what caused the injuries, he said.

"It's an ongoing investigation," Sternbeck said. "We're trying to piece things together. Hopefully, we'll be able to speak to the subject at some point to get a better sense of the events leading up to the injury."
