Bike Crash Temporarily Closes Patrick Henry Drive

Police believe incident was medically related.

A bicycle crash that closed part of Patrick Henry Drive for about an hour Tuesday afternoon appears to have been medically related, according to the Arlington County Police Department.

Both lanes of Patrick Henry were closed shortly after 3 p.m. between 9th Road North and 11th Street North due to the crash, according to a county alert. They were reopened about an hour later.

Police initially received a call of a man down who had been riding a bicycle and originally thought a vehicle had been involved, Detective Chris Feltman said.

"It appears now there was no vehicle involved and that the person on the bicycle had medical emergency," Feltman said. "What it was, we can only guess. Did he faint? Was it a seizure? But it appears it was a medical issue rather than a hit-and-run involving a motor vehicle."

The cyclist, who has not been identified, was taken to an area hospital. His or her condition was unknown as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, though Feltman said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Typical police reaction - must have been a hit and run. Wonder what Patch will say when some bicyclist smacks into the rear of a motor vehicle stopped at a stop light? Probably that it was the driver's fault, he / she should have been on a car free diet.
