Funeral Services Saturday for Marymount Prof. Rhett Leverett

Funeral services will take place this weekend for Marymount University professor Rhett Leverett.

“A passionate historian, a southern gentleman, a humorous storyteller and, above all, an outstanding teacher and advisor,” were some words that university used to describe Leverett in an obituary written by university staff.

The professor, 60, was struck by a car on Monday while walking on the 500 block of Sixth Street, N.W., D.C.  The Metropolitan Police Department said in a press release that the driver had a medical emergency when her vehicle jumped the curb and struck Mr. Leverett.

Mr. Leverett was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.

He had taught at the Arlington university since 1991.

A visitation will take place on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday. Both will take place at the Joseph Gawler's Sons Funeral Home, 5130 Wisconsin Ave N.W., Washington, D.C.

In addition, a memorial service will take place on Marymount’s Main Campus on Oct. 17 from 11:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. The service will take place under a tent on the Ireton Lawn; in the event of inclement weather, it will be held in the Lee Center.
