National Chamber Ensemble Season Opening - Jewish Musical Treasures

JEWISH MUSICAL TREASURES

The National Chamber Ensemble (NCE) 2013-14 Season opening night, "Jewish Musical Treasures,” will celebrate extraordinary music of Jewish Culture on Saturday November 9, 2013 at 7:30 PM at the Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre at Artisphere in Arlington, Virginia.  NCE's high quality, inspiring season begins on the 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht" a significant and tragic date in history. While acknowledging this tragic prelude to the Holocaust that was to come, the performance will be a celebration of extraordinary music. The concert will feature several premieres including the world premiere of "Trio on the Roof," by acclaimed composer Alexander Goldstein for violin, clarinet and piano. The remarkable composition is based on the musical Fiddler On the Roof.  Also on the program will be works by Ernest Bloch, George Gershwin, John Williams as well as the premiere of "Sabbath Song" by the Obie winning and Tony nominated composer Gary William Friedman. For this concert the internationally acclaimed clarinetist Julian Milkis, the only student of Benny Goodman will captivate the audience as well as Cantor Mikhail Manevich, a renowned musician and cantor of the Washington Hebrew Congregation in Washington DC.

Kristallnacht, the infamous 'night of shattered glass'  lingers in the Jewish cultural memory as an eerily prophetic prelude to the tragic Holocaust that followed in Nazi Germany.  On November 9th and 10th of 1938, 91 Jews were publicly debased and murdered in the streets.  Over 25,000 Jewish citizens were arrested and deported to concentrations camps. In one evening more than 200 synagogues were ransacked and destroyed as were thousands of Jewish homes and businesses. The National Chamber Ensemble concert “Jewish Musical Treasures” will note this heartbreaking tragedy through our concert celebrating the joy of life and creative survival. The Ensemble will perform music of beloved composers whose contributions symbolize the vibrant and continued flourishing of Jewish culture.

Tickets for the concert are $30, adults and $15, students. The Spectrum Theatre is located two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro station and has free underground parking (enter off of Arlington Ridge Road).
