Money Race: Beyer Leads Among 8th Congressional District Candidates

Democratic primary is less than two months away, June 10.

With the Democratic primary less than two months away, Donald S. Beyer, Jr. the former Virginia lieutenant governor who more recently served as a U.S. ambassador, is winning the money race among the 10 Democrats running for the 8th congressional District seat in Northern Virginia.

The seat is open after Congressman Jim Moran announced in January that he was retiring from Congress.

Beyer's campaign has raised $672,104 and spent $222,468 as of March 31, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The other candidates in the race, and the amounts they have raised (if the figures were available either from the center or from the campaign are, in order of amount raised):

  • Mark Levine: $322,808 (77 percent or $250,000 of that self-financed); spent $23,530 as of March 31
  • Lavern Chatman:  $298,697.29 (information provided by the campaign; the amount does not include funds raised from an event with Oprah Winfrey held earlier this month in Arlington)
  • Bill Euille: $213,971 (does not include amounts raised from recent fundraiser by Sheila Johnson at Salamander Resort in Middleburg) 
  • Patrick Hope: $186,534; spent $47,801 as of March 31
  • Adam Ebbin: $178,000
  • Charniele Herring: $121,315; spent $31,640 as of March 31
  • Bruce Shuttleworth: $57,188
  • Derek Hyra: $26,049; spent $11,579
Republican candidate Micah Edmond has raised $44,341 and spent $22,928.
Also:
  • Alfonso Lopez (who dropped out of the campaign): $79,904; spent $16,274 as of March 31
  • Nancy Najarian (who is now out of the race, after failing to obtain enough signatures to qualify for the ballot): $301,996; spent $22,977 as of March 31
  • Mark Sickles (who dropped out of the campaign): $63,687; spent $48,327 as of March 31
