VIDEO: Vets Honor Fallen Arlingtonians at Clarendon War Memorial

Groups hold annual wreath-laying ceremony at Clarendon Central Park

American Legion posts 139, 85 and 194, along with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter, held a wreath-laying ceremony at Clarendon Central Park on Memorial Day. The park, immediately behind the Clarendon Metro station, is home to a war memorial that lists the names of Arlingtonians who died in battle through Vietnam.

The groups hold the ceremony twice a year, on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

More than 100 people stood solemnly in the May heat as the various groups and their auxiliaries placed wreaths at the foot of the memorial. For the benediction, American Legion Post 139 Chaplain John Mallon led the crowd in singing "God Bless America."

The story will repeat itself this coming Monday at 1 pm at the Clarendon War Memorial, same players, different bystanders. Arlington Post 139, American Legion, conducts this service every Memorial Day at 1 pm, and every Veterans Day, also at 1 pm. On some inclement weather days it was moved indoors at Post 139, 3445 Washington Blvd, Arlington VA 22201.
